Some scholars have been against teaching poetry in ELT classes for a long time because the language used in poetry is deviated from standard language. Criteria for choosing poetry - interest of the students - Language level - Stylistic level (the work should not be heavily loaded with figurative language.
Because of rhyme and rhythm it is easy to teach pronunciation. Students become aware of the fact that besides standard usage, there are deviated forms of English (such poems are suitable for upper intermediate and advanced levels). Some poems appeal to the feelings of the students or some poems may be humorous so teaching poems may boost intrinsic motivation.
The students have to deduce the meaning. Students can be encouraged to interpret the poem. So speaking skills can be developed. Teaching poetry helps develop reading, writing and listening skills.
Teaching poetry promotes critical thinking. Teaching poetry develops creative thinking.
Teaching poetry in ELT classes gives the student a sense of achievement. It increases self-confidence
