GEOFFREY CHAUCER AND THE CANTERBURY TALES The Middle English Literary Period
THE MIDDLE ENGLISH PERIOD Middle English began in 1066- during the NORMAN CONQUEST The Normans (French) invaded England in 1066- causing a change in the English language Society began to change as well as the English language
MIDDLE ENGLISH VS. OLD ENGLISH Middle English was different from Old English because literature now poked fun at social standards Instead of giving glory to a hero- heroes were now seen as flawed individuals
MEDIEVAL LIFE Medieval Life consisted of many things: 1. Advances in Sports and Leisure 2. More respect towards women 3. Chivalry- honor code for men 4. Strict social system
GEOFFREY CHAUCER 1343?-1400 Started working as a page (personal assistant) at 14, captured as a Prisoner of War, married a noblewoman, and acquired a great wealth Began working on the Canterbury Tales later in life. Only 24 of the 120 projected tales were completed
CHAUCERS SHARP EYE FOR DRESS There were Medieval Dress Codes in place during the Medieval ages. Styles were Modest, Pleasure loving, and meant to suit a person s profession

CANTERBURY TALES: THE PROLOGUE The Prologue of the Canterbury Tales tells the story of RELIGIOUS PILGRIMS who are on their way to a sacred place- the tomb of St. Thomas in Canterbury, England Each character is either described in a NEGATIVE or POSITIVE way
CHARACTER LIST- CANTERBURY TALES The Narrator- He tells the story (not named) The Knight- Honorable, yet slightly arrogant The Wife of Bath- married 5 times The Pardoner- a Priest who collected church funds for himself The Miller- Strong, and a drunk The Monk- a man of the church who only cares about hunting and eating
CHARACTER LIST- CANTERBURY TALES The Prioress- a nun who wants to have luxurious tastes The Friar- another priest who loves women and taking bribes from people The Summoner- a man who is in charge of bringing people into court who have broken the law; he is also a drunk The PARSON- the ONLY honest church man in the group; he is humble and devout AND MANY MORE!!!!!!!!!
