WELCOME TO BIBLE STUDY! July 18th, 2021
Luthers Morning Prayer I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
Julys Hymn: LSB #655 Lord, Keep Us 1 Lord, keep us steadfast in Your Word; Curb those who by deceit or sword Would wrest the kingdom from Your Son And bring to naught all He has done. 3 O Comforter of priceless worth, Send peace and unity on earth; Support us in our final strife And lead us out of death to life. 2 Lord Jesus Christ, Your pow r make known, For You are Lord of lords alone; Defend Your holy Church that we May sing Your praise eternally.
To Husbands Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers. 1 Peter 3:7 Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. Col. 3:9
To Wives Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. Eph. 5:22 They were submissive to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. 1 Peter 3:5-6

THE BOOK OF RUTH THE BOOK OF RUTH CHAPTER 1
Ruth Chapter 1 | The Dilemma Broken up into two sections: 1:1-5 | Scene A: Tragedy (Prologue) 1:6-22 | Scene B: Homecoming (Setting)
Notes on the Text (1:1-5) 1:1 sojourn in the country of Moab This is a fascinating mistranslation of sa-deh in the Hebrew. The author intentionally avoided the word land/country from Ruth, instead, opting to use region/pasture of Moab. This was because Moab was dominated by Israel and annexed as part of its Kingdom. 1:2 Elimelech, Naomi, Mahlon, Chilion what s in a name? Elimelech my God is King ; Naomi pleasant, delightful ; Mahlon sickly ; Chilion extinct Generally, a name that was given because of its actual or supposed meaning described a character or relationship that may have influenced the person s conduct or been fulfilled in his experiences. 1:4 Orpah and Ruth what s in a name part two? Orpah Arabic in nature cloud of hair ; Ruth refreshment, fullness Ruth a play on words referenced in 1:21 Naomi laments, I went away full, but empty the LORD returned me! when in reality, Ruth and the LORD are with her and Ruth will be used to fill her once more
Chiasm in 1:1-5 A Famine in Bethlehem (1:1a) Planned short stay in Moab (1:1b) C Names of the emigrating family members (1:2) D Death of Elimelech (1:3; in emphatic position) C1 Names of the daughters-in-law (1:4a) B1 The long stay in Moab (1:4b) A1 The sons deaths: bereavement in Moab (1:5) B These all find their parallels in 4:16-22 (1:5 Naomi s boys die, 4:16 she holds a boy)
Questions and Relevance As Ruth 1:1-5 portrays one tragedy after another, the essence of drama confronts the readers and hearers. Drawn into the story s tension of a family faced with extinction, we find ourselves asking: Can they possibly survive? Will God come to their aid? Crises arose for women, especially widows, when men neglected their duties or took advantage of the vulnerable. With the deaths of three (all men) of the original six characters the stage is set and the crowd would be eagerly waiting Will God intervene? Eve (Gen 4:1); Sarah (Gen 12:10-13); Rebekah (Gen 25:21); Rachel (Gen 30:1); Hannah (1 Sam. 1:1-11)
Where is Jesus? Elimelech would have pricked the ears of the astute Israelite listener who knew that Bethlehem was the hometown of David my God is King is a refrain of David and in the 8th century, Micah was inspired to pen that Bethlehem would be the birthplace of Christ Bethlehem (lit. House of Bread) would become the place where the true Bread of Life would be incarnated, giving His very flesh for all mankind there will be no more famine in Bethlehem He is actively involved in the undoing of the tragedy in 1:1-5 and He is God s answer to whether or not God intervenes
Notes on the Text (1:6-22) 1:6 the LORD had visited his people and given them food visited here primarily means to pay attention to, take note of, visit graciously it is akin to God remembering the plight of His people (already foreshadowing His answer) given them food is very poetic: latet lahem la em 1:15, 16 her people her god(s) your God my God people refers to a national group of blood relatives My people Israel gods/God is likely singular in meaning, emphasizing that Ruth is prepared to fully assimilate into the nation of Israel and worship YHWH thus beginning to fulfill Ruth s name to Naomi (confirmed in 1:17, when Ruther invokes the name YHWH to her confession only in 1 Sam. 20:13 does that happen) 1:21 Parallelism in Poetry! I the LORD | full empty | went away brought back Similar poetry throughout the Psalms the contrast between God and man and the perceptions of each cannot be missed, what does it mean to be full/empty, etc?
Chiasm in 1:6-19a with a Coda A Setting out to return to Bethlehem from Moab (1:6-7) Naomi urges Orpah and Ruth to return to Moab (1:8-9a) C Naomi kisses them farewell (1:9b) D Orpah and Ruth insist on accompanying Naomi (1:10) D1 Naomi passionately urges them to return to Moab (1:11-13) C1 Orpah kisses Naomi farewell, but Ruth does not (1:14) B1 Naomi again urges Ruth to return to Moab, but Ruth declares her loyalty to Naomi and her God (1:15-17) A1 Naomi acquiesces, and they enter Bethlehem (1:18-19) B Coda: Summary of 1 in v20-21, Foreshadowing of 2 in v22
Questions and Relevance Faith demonstrated in tragedy by Naomi in God s esed The prayer that YHWH will take care of the Orpah and Ruth 1:8 The revealing of YHWH caring for even Naomi in Ruth 4 Brokenness in 1:10-13 Naomi presents the argument and conditions as realistically as possible, thus emphasizing the absurdity of Orpah and Ruth staying with her for maximum effect. The repeat reader is to key in on these verses to see how YHWH s reversal takes place. For Naomi, it s impossible to conceive of God s grace but with YHWH, the impossible is possible: even a virgin can conceive (Is 7:14, Lk 1:30-38), the dead can be raised (Jn 11:21-27), and sinners can be justified (Mt 19:23-26; Rom 3:21-24; 4:5; 5:6-8)
Where is Jesus? The promise given to Israel is given to all nations (Gen 12; 17) thus Ruth becomes the model for many converts who once we aliens and are now united fully with Christ and all Christians Confirmation Liturgy: Do you intend to continue steadfast in this confession and Church and to suffer all, even death, rather than fall away from it? I do so intend with the help of God empty YHWH returned me Naomi was concentrating on her loss of husband and sons, and thus lamented the demise of what fullness meant to her ignoring the presence of Ruth, yet she s still there

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
