Bible Words to describe/define Jesus Death Atonement - payment of penalty Gen 3 - animals to cover Adam & Eve Ex 12 - Passover blood Lev 16 - Day of Atonement & (8) scapegoat OT temple, altars, blood sacrifices Isaiah 53:4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted.

  5. Words to describe/define Jesus Death Propitiation - satisfying and appeasing God s righteous wrath against sin and sinners. active wrath (swift) & passive (evil sconsequences) John 3:36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."

  6. Words to describe/define Jesus Death Propitiation - satisfying and appeasing God s righteous wrath against sin and sinners. active wrath (swift) & passive (evil sconsequences) cup of God s fury - Isa 51:17; Jer 25:15 Matt 26:39 Jesus went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will."

  7. Words to describe/define Jesus Death Propitiation - satisfying and appeasing God s righteous wrath against sin and sinners. active wrath (swift) & passive (evil sconsequences) cup of God s fury - Isa 51:17; Jer 25:15 Rom 3:23-25 by His blood I Jn 2:2 for our sins but also for the whole world 4:10 Not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiationfor our sins.

  8. Words to describe/define Jesus Death Redemption - liberated from bondage Ex 6:6 I am the LORD, and I will rid you out of Egypt s bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments. 1Peter 1:18,19 You were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and spot.

  9. Words to describe/define Jesus Death Justification - declared and treated as holy. legal term - judged not guilty constructionor financialterm -brought into line emotional term - wrongs addressed when I have been wronged, I want justice when I have done wrong, I want grace Q - How can God justify sinners (treat them as holy) yet remain just (punishing unholiness)?

  10. It is finished! On the cross Jesus absorbed all the wrath of Divine judgment and then from the cross offers all the forgiveness of Divine mercy and grace. Rom 5:18 Through one man's offense (Adam) judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man's righteous act (Jesus) the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life.

  11. Titus 3:5-7 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Q - What role do we humans play in salvation?

  12. Gods sovereignty & mans responsibility Phil 2:12 My beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

  13. John Calvin (Calvinism) (1509-1564) French Protestant Reformer Jacobus Arminius (Arminianism) (1560 1609) Dutch Protestant Reformer

  14. T.U.L.I.P. - Doctrines of Grace (balancing sovereignty & responsibility) T - Total Depravity U - Unconditional Election L - Limited Atonement I - Irresistible Grace P - Preservation of the Saints

  15. Total Depravity Not that everyone is totally evil, but that evil impacts the totality (body, soul, spirit) of every person. Jer17:9 -heart deceitful & desperately wicked Rom 3:9-18 - multiple body parts listed Eph 2:1-3 - dead in trespasses and sins I Thess 5:23 - spirit, soul, body sanctified

  16. Total Depravity Total Inability Gen 3 - Dead Adam responds Luke 15:24 - Dead son returns John 5:24,25 - Dead hear and believe I Tim 5:6 - Dead woman living

  17. Free Will of Man Matt 23:37 - I (Jesus) wanted to gather you were not willing. John 5:40 - You are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. Rev 22:17 - The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that hears say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

  18. Pastor James & Calvinism Total Depravity

  19. T - Total Depravity U - Unconditional Election = being chosen John 15:16 You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain. Eph 1:4 He has chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.

  20. Unconditional Election in the sense that there are no conditions or strings attached to God s choice. He is not waiting for our works. But from the human perspective, genuine faith is always a condition. All are responsible to believe.

  21. John 1:12 To them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. John 3:36 He that does not believe the Son will not see life; but the wrath of God abides on him. Acts 16:31 - Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.

  22. But are we predestined to believe? John Calvin, Institutes ... Not all men are created with similar destiny, but eternal life is foreordained for some, and eternal damnation for others. Every man, therefore, being created for one or the other ends, we say, is predestined either to life or to death.

  23. R.C. Sproul, Essentials Double Predestination is unavoidable if we take scripture seriously. What is crucial, however, is how double predestination is understood.

  24. 1 The positive-positive predestination means that God actively works grace into the hearts of the elect bringing them to faith, and actively works evil into the hearts of the reprobate preventing them from coming to faith. - Hyper-Calvinism

  25. 2 The positive-negative predestination means that God actively and unilaterally regenerates the elect and insures their salvation, but does not work evil in the reprobate, nor prevent them from faith, but instead passes over them, leaving them to their sin and rebellion. - Reformed

  26. Key Verses on Election/Predestination II Pet 3:9 - The Lord is not willing (does not boulomai = determine) that any should perishbut that all should come to repentance. I Pet 1:2 - Elect according to foreknowledge Rom 8:29 - Whom He foreknew He predestined

  27. Hard Passages Rom 9 Jacob I love, Esau I hate (12) issue of serving, not saving. (13) national (Edom), not mainly individual (Esau) - Mal 1:1-5 (17,18) Pharaoh s hardened heart Ex 4-14 God (10x); Pharoah (3x); ? (5x)

  28. Pastor James & Calvinism Total Depravity Unconditional Election

  29. T - Total Depravity U - Unconditional Election L - Limited Atonement Christ died (made atonement) only for the elect. Issue = definitions of world , all . John 3:16 God so loved the world that whoever believes has everlasting life.

  30. Key Verses on Limiting the Atonement 1Tim 4:10 To this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. 1John 2:2 He Himself is the propitiation (covering, satisfaction) for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

  31. Isa 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Come in humbly at the 1st all , leave rejoicing at the 2nd all .)

  32. Heb 2:9 We see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honor; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. Rev 22:17 The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" Let him who hears say, "Come!" And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.

  33. Balanced view of the Atonement Not universalism (everyone is not eventually saved). Not limited (Christ did not only die for some. All = all.)

  34. Christs atoning work on the cross is Sufficient for all, efficient for those who believe. Potential for all, actual for those who believe. Common grace is experienced by all. All are safe until accountable (infants & mentally unable).

  35. Pastor James & Calvinism Total Depravity Unconditional Election Limited Atonement

  36. T - Total Depravity U - Unconditional Election L- Limited Atonement I - Irresistible Grace God s convicting and saving work is necessary and cannot be resisted. Man s will is NOT free. At stake is the very nature of our love and faith. (Robots?)

  37. Key Verses (where resistance is real) Prov 1:24 I called, and you refused; I stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; 25 You have set at nought all my counsel, and would (have) none of my reproof: 26 So I [Lord (7); Wisdom (20); who pours out His Spirit (23)] will laugh at your calamity, and mock when your fear comes.

  38. John 5:40 And you (Jews) will not come to me (Jesus), that you might have life. Matt 23:37 O Jerusalem How often I would have gathered you together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not! Acts 7:51 Stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart & ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. God s Grace can be resisted.

  39. Heb 10:29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? God the Holy Spirit can be insulted.

  40. Pastor James & Calvinism Total Depravity Unconditional Election Limited Atonement Irresistible Grace

  41. T - Total Depravity U - Unconditional Election L- Limited Atonement I - Irresistible Grace P - Preservation of the Saints All redeemed saints will be preserved. They are eternally secure. Jude 1:1 Jude, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called.

  42. Key Verses on Preservation/Security 1Thess 5:23 I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Phil 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he who has begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.

  43. Rom 8:38,39 I am persuaded that (nothing, and no one) will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. 1John 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.

  44. Pastor James & Calvinism Total Depravity Unconditional Election Limited Atonement Irresistible Grace Preservation of the Saints

  45. What are Calvinisms Positive effects? Emphasis on God s sovereignty Steady, less emotional approach Strong grasp on eternal security Deep study of Bible Doctrines

  46. What are Calvinisms Negative effects? Theological System elevated above Scripture? Limit the infinite (God s love displayed on the cross)? Complicate the gospel to the harm of children/common man? Sap passion for persuading men? Lost hope for abortion/infant deaths?

  47. Acts 17:11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.

  48. Basic Biblical Doctrines TRINITY (God Is) REVELATION (God speaks) CREATION (God Makes) IMAGE (God Reflected) FALL (God Rejected) COVENANT (God Pursues) INCARNATION (God Comes) CROSS (God Dies) RESURRECTION (God Saves)
