  2. The Biblical Practice Of Benevolence

  3. The Biblical Practice Of Benevolence Our lesson concerns the Biblical practice of a spiritual work Behind every practice there is a purpose, motivation, or reason. Sometimes there is no logical reason behind, the purpose, or motivation, but there still remains a purpose or reason. We as Christians must know and understand that everything we do, in the name of the Lord, must be according to the New Testament pattern.

  7. The Biblical Practice Of Benevolence The Practice Must be according to The Pattern Pattern {tupos} it has varied specific applications, e.x. It can refer to an image, inscription or figure (Matt 22:20; Acts 7:43). Avisible impression or trace made as the result of a blow or pressure (Jn 20:25) A kind or class, implying a relationship to some model or pattern (Acts 23:25) A visual form designed to be imitated or copied (Acts 7:44; Heb 8:5 Cf Ex 25:40) A model of behavior as an example to be imitated or to be avoided (Phil 3:17; 1 Cor 10:6; 1 Tim 1:16; 2 Tim 1:13) In all these instances a pattern is something already established and is intended to be emulated, followed, or kept, or not

  8. But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. (Matt 15:3 9 KJV)

  9. Purereligion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. (James 1:27 KJV)

  10. The Biblical Practice Of Benevolence The Purpose & Reason To render thanksgiving to God (Col 3:17) To Glorify God (1 Pet 4:11; Matt 5:16) To fulfill need (Gal 2:10; Eph 4:28) Both (2 Cor 9:12-15) To be like God (Matt 5:44-48) To be remembered/rewarded by God (Matt 6:1-4; *Heb 6:10; *1 Tim 6:17-19)

  11. The Biblical Practice Of Benevolence The Method How did Individual Christians Provide For Themselves in the 1st Century Worked (Acts 20:34-35; Acts 18:2-3; Lk 3:14 [Soldier] 5:7 [Publican]) Sold (Acts 2:45; 4:34,37; 5:1-4; ) Goods, Services, Crops, etc Agriculture_Farming, Cattle, Sheep, etc The Many parables of Christ show how prevalent this was in the 1st century Inherited (Lk 12:2; 15:11-12) Invested (Matt 6:19; 25; 1 Tim 6:17) It s by these sources that we as individually Christians are able to fund the spiritual act of benevolence (Acts 20:35; Eph 4:28; 1 Tim 6:12; 1 Cor 13:3; Gal 6:9-10) (Gal 2:10 Cf Act 24:17)?

  12. The Biblical Practice Of Benevolence The Method How did churches provide for their own (1 Cor 16:1-2; 2 Cor 8:1-2; 9:1-2; Rom 15:26) Perhaps in some cases both were employed (Acts 11:27- 29)

  13. The Biblical Practice Of Benevolence The Biblical Practice Has Limitations Individually According to opportunity (Gal 6:10)... According to means (2 Cor 6:13-16) Collectively According to need (Matt 6:8,32; Phil 4:16) According to what we have (2 Cor 8:12) According to the other (2 Thess 3:10-12) Only to saints Cf (1 Tim 5:1-16) Consider these limitations. If such were placed on Christians, is it so hard to believe that limitations were placed on non- Christians!
