Chapter 11 Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and His name shall be called Emmanuel.
Mary and Joseph were getting excited for the birth of Jesus, when suddenly they heard that King Herod wanted to have a census of all the people. They had to travel all the way to Bethlehem to register in the town where Joseph s ancestors were from.
A census is a count of all the people. Why would kings want to know how many people there were? To know how many people they could have in an army (the more people, the stronger they could be) To know how many people needed to be fed Bethlehem was the town where Joseph s great ancestor, King David, was from. King David was from the tribe of Judah one of Jacob s 12 sons. Do you know what Bethlehem means? House of Bread!
Did Mary and Joseph take a plane a car a bus a train ? No, they walked! And Mary rode a donkey. What do you think that felt like for her? How did Joseph feel when she had to suffer so much?
What if you went to stay at Disneyland. Sounds fun, right? But what if, when you got there, you had to sleep out in the cold overnight because there were too many people and you couldn t get a hotel room. How would you feel? Joseph was a strong man and a good protector for Mary. How did he feel when he couldn t get any place for Mary to have her baby except a cold, dirty, smelly stable?
Jesus was not born as a rich king but in poverty.
Birth of a King Birth of Jesus Great Feast Expensive gifts Beautiful clothes Fancy bed Nice palace Everyone would know he was born Poor shepherds came with nothing to give Wrapped in swaddling clothes Laid in a manger Born in a stable No one knew
I bring you good news. A Savior has been born to you. You will find Him lying in a manger.
The first people to learn about the newborn Savior. They were poor. They were Jewish.
The Magi saw a star and followed it to find the King. The Magi were not Jewish. They were gentiles. The Magi brought gold, frankincense and myrrh. They knew Jesus was a king even though He looked like a poor baby.
God told Joseph through an angel to take Jesus and Mary to Egypt, so Jesus would not die.
