  1. Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of God Matt. 5:3 He went up into the mountain... (Matt. 5:1)

  2. Blessed A Happiness not determined by outward circumstances... wealth, popularity, etc. Not determined by monetary wealth (cf. Lk. 6:20) Jesus preached good tidings to the poor never filled man s folded aprons with coin (Matt. 11:2-6) Desire for wealth in never satisfying with lasting happiness (Eccl. 5:10, Prov. 23:5, Matt. 19:16-22) Blessed / Woe (Lk. 6:22,26)

  3. Blessed True happiness rises above and beyond all circumstances... Hear the word of God and do it (John 13:17, Rev. 1:3) Continually serving the Lord (Lk. 12:30, Rev. 16:15) Accept the Lord s invitation to His prepared supper (Matt. 19:15-24, Rev. 19:9) Not hurt by second death but rewarded (Lk. 14:14, Rev. 20:6)

  4. Blessed The blessed state of happiness characterizes God, Jesus, and the citizens who belong in the kingdom (2 Pet. 1:4, Psm. 119:12, I Tim. 1:11, 6:16) Since God is Holy we must be Holy Since God is Blessed must we be blessed or happy as well? No place in the kingdom for unhappy people

The Reason for Our Happiness for theirs is the kingdom of heaven Establishing an earthly kingdom was still on the mind of disciples after Jesus resurrection (Acts 1:6) Kingdom within you (Lk. 18:13) Jesus kingdom is not of this world (Jn. 18:36) Citizens are not of this world - but not taken out of this world (Jn. 17:14-15)

The Reason for Our Happiness for theirs is the kingdom of heaven Pharisees were listening - Looking back to the Old Law for justification Sadducees were listening looking ahead beyond the Scriptures not believing in sprits, angels, or the resurrection Essenes were listening moving away Jerusalem escaping from spiritual decay and Roman rule Zealots were listening moving against Roman rule (cf. Lk. 6:15)

  7. The Reason for Our Happiness for theirs is the kingdom of heaven Jesus is speaking of His spiritual kingdom... Not establishing the Old Law for justification cannot enter (Matt. 5:20) Not ignoring spiritual reality of the inward man future glory of glorified body (I Cor. 15:44) Not withdrawing from contact with this world Not fighting against to overthrow earthly kingdoms

The Connecting Character the poor in spirit The word denotes destitute beggarly so (Lk. 16:20) Publican s spirit contrasted with spirit of the Pharisee (Lk. 18:13) Paul Our own righteousness , our own glory... nothing... (Phil. 3:4-9) A broken and contrite heart God will not despise (Psm. 51:17) Greater than John the Baptist? - you enter the kingdom destitute submitting to God s rule in your life (Matt. 11:11)
