  2. WHICH PUNISHMENTS DID THESE CRIMES GET? Continuous swearing Running a brothel Being drunk Murderers who escaped the death penalty Gambling Thieves Failure to attend church Vagrants Adultery

  3. HIGHWAY ROBBERY Highway Robbery was punishable by execution. It was seen as dangerous & the government wanted to stop it disrupting trade.

  4. SMUGGLING Smuggling was punishable by execution. 35 smugglers were hanged in 1748 This included members of the Hawksworth Gang who murdered 2 customs officials by dragging them through the street by horses.

  5. POACHING In 1723 the Black Act made poaching punishable by execution. It was seen as damaging to landowners and the government wanted to keep the lower classes in their place.
