WHO IS THE AMERICAN BOARD OF MEDICAL SPECIALTIES (ABMS)? The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) works in collaboration with 24 specialty Member Boards to maintain the standards for physician certification. Our focus is on improving the quality of health care to patients, families, and communities by supporting the continuous professional development of physician specialists. We achieve our mission as an organization by helping physicians achieve their potential as providers of quality health care.
MAINTENANCE OF BOARD CERTIFICATION (MOC) VS CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS FOR LICENSURE Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Medical Licensure Renewal Four Part Framework Ongoing Measurement Of The ABMS/ACGME Six Core Competencies
WHAT IS MEANT BY BOARD CERTIFICATION AND MAINTENANCE OF CERTIFICATION (MOC)? http://www.abms.org/board-certification/
HOW DOES BOARD CERTIFICATION DIFFER FROM MEDICAL LICENSURE? Board Certification is a voluntary process, and one that is very different from medical licensure. Obtaining a medical license sets the minimum competency requirements to diagnose and treat patients, it is not specialty specific. Board Certification demonstrates a physician s exceptional expertise in a particular specialty and/or subspecialty of medical practice http://www.abms.org/board-certification/
WHAT THEN IS MOC? Maintenance of Certification Once Board Certified, physicians maintain their medical specialty expertise by participating in a robust continuous professional development program called the ABMS Program for MOC. The MOC program provides physicians a structured approach for enhancing patient care and improving patient outcomes through focused assessment and improvement activities. MOC: Involves the ongoing measurement of six physician competencies as determined by the ABMS and the ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education). In the ABMS program for MOC these are measured within a four part framework.
THE SIX ABMS/ACGME COMPETENCIES The ABMS Program for MOC involves ongoing measurement of six core competencies defined by ABMS and ACGME: Practice-based Learning and Improvement Patient Care and Procedural Skills Systems-based Practice Medical Knowledge Interpersonal and Communication Skills Professionalism
THE ABMSS FOUR PART FRAMEWORK These competencies, which are the same ones used in the ACGME s Next Accreditation System, are measured in the ABMS Program for MOC within a four-part framework: Part I: Professionalism and Professional Standing Part II: Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment Part III: Assessment of Knowledge, Judgment and Skills Part IV: Improvement in Medical Practice

MAINTENANCE OF BOARD CERTIFICATION VS MAINTENANCE OF LICENSURE Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Licensure Renewal Four Part Framework Ongoing Measurement Of The ABMS/ACGME Six Core Competencies Why can t accredited CME activities meet both requirements?
THE AMERICAN BOARD OF INTERNAL MEDICINE (ABIM) IS A MEMBER OF THE ABMS Note the ABIM covers Internal Medicine and its 20 subspecialties
For those physicians certified by the ABIM there has been recent controversy about the ABIM s MOC process. This has led to a look at how the MOC process for Internal Medicine and its specialties can be improved.
HERE THE STORY SWITCHES TO THE ACCME CME in support of MOC http://www.accme.org/cme-counts-abim-moc
CME THAT COUNTS FOR MOC CME THAT COUNTS FOR MOC Who? Who? ACCME and the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) What? What? Integration of Maintenance of Certification (MOC) and accredited CME Why? Why? To expand the number and diversity of accredited CME activities that offer ABIM MOC points To streamline the process for registering CME activities in ABIM's MOC program
ABIM & CME CME providers in the ACCME System have the option but are not required to offer accredited CME that meets ABIM's MOC program requirements Activity and participant completion data is tracked through PARS
MOC POINT ASSIGNMENT Providers should assign MOC points equivalent to the maximum allowable AMA PRA Category 1 Credits for the activity. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Content must be relevant to physicians certified by ABIM Be peer-reviewed during the planning process by at least two reviewers who are not the author(s) Have a comprehensive evaluation component that measures learners change methods can include multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, or longer-form tests Must have passing standard (performance level decided by provider) Include feedback to learner (rationale for correct answer with citations) Exam length decided by provider written or shared responses other formative and summative content-relevant exercises that evaluate the effectiveness of the learning
COMMUNICATION OF MOC The MOC statement must appear on all MOC activity materials (except on initial, save-the-date type announcements): Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to [XX] MOC points [and patient safety MOC credit] in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit."
COMMUNICATION, CONT The statement, Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. may be omitted if MOC points are being offered for only a portion of a larger CME activity.
PARTICIPANT COMPLETION INFORMATION The provider must have systems, resources and process in place to: Collect the participant completion data, including: ABIM ID First and Last Name Date of Birth (mm/dd) Activity Completion Date (mm/dd/yyyy) PARS Activity Identifier (number auto assigned by PARS) MOC Points (equivalent to amount of CME credits claimed) Obtain permission from the participant to share the completion data with ACCME; and Transmit the completion data to ACCME on behalf of the participant.
REGISTERING CME ACTIVITIES FOR ABIM S MOC PROGRAM STEP 1: UNDERSTAND ABIM S MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE ASSESSMENT RECOGNITION PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS attest that the activity meets the relevant requirements and policies specified in the ABIM Medical Knowledge Assessment Recognition Program Guide STEP 2: ENTER ACTIVITY DATA INTO PARS Enter all required activity information into PARS as usual to open the activity record
REGISTERING CME ACTIVITIES STEP 3: COMPLETE MOC INFORMATION Would you like to register this CME activity for MOC ? Yes Which specialty board(s) American Board of Internal Medicine Complete attestation Indicate all specialties # of MOC points (usually the same as # of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits offered) Patient Safety MOC attestation (if applicable) STEP 4: COMPLETE PARTICIPANT INFORMATION
MOC IN PARS STEP 1: ACCESSTHE PARS PARTICIPANTMANAGEMENT INTERFACE Tabs will change and the header of the page will change from blue to red.
TABS WILL CHANGE AND THE HEADER OF THE PAGE WILL CHANGE FROM BLUE TO RED.
STEP 2: ENTEROR UPLOAD PARTICIPANTS 3 options for reporting MOC participant data in PARS: 1) enter the participant data for a specific activity via a web form, 2) upload the participant data using a batch upload, or 3) utilize the new ACCME PARS Web Service.
