  5. Hebrews 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

  6. LET US PRAY LET US PRAY

  7. MOTIVATION

  8. OUR NEEDS A.Maslow's Hierarchy Of Needs 1. Physiological needs - food, clothing, shelter 2. Safety needs - freedom from physical harm 3. Love needs - feeling loved by touch, words, kindness 4. Esteem needs - feeling good about who you are 5. Self-actualization needs - fulfilling dreams, living up to your potential

  9. OUR NEEDS B. What is it that causes us to do the things we do? 1. Fear: Hunger, Loneliness, Pain, Death 2. Guilt: Esteem, Obligation 3. Reward: Satisfaction, Companionship, Money C. Fear, reward & guilt are all biblical reasons for doing the will of God. D. We're going to look at 5 areas of Christianity and see how we are motivated by fear, reward & guilt. Obedience, attendance, bible study, soul winning & brotherly love.

  10. I.FEAR: PAIN (PHYSICAL, MENTAL, SPIRITUAL), LOSS A. (Rom 28-9) but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness; indignation and wrath, {9} tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; B. OBEDIENCE - (2 Th 1:8) in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. C. ATTENDANCE - (Heb 10:25-26) not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. {26} For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,

  11. I.FEAR: PAIN (PHYSICAL, MENTAL, SPIRITUAL), LOSS D. BIBLE STUDY - (2 Th 2:9-12) The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, {10} and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. {11} And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, {12} that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

  12. I.FEAR: PAIN (PHYSICAL, MENTAL, SPIRITUAL), LOSS E. SOUL WINNING - (Ezek 3:17-21) "Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them warning from Me: {18} "When I say to the wicked, You shall surely die,' and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. {19} {'Yet, if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul. >>>

  13. I.FEAR: PAIN (PHYSICAL, MENTAL, SPIRITUAL), LOSS {20} "Again, when a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die; because you did not give him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; but his blood I will require at your hand. {21} "Nevertheless if you warn the righteous man that the righteous should not sin, and he does not sin, he shall surely live because he took warning; also you will have delivered your soul. F. BROTHERLY LOVE - (1 John 3: 14b) He who does not love his brother abides in death.

  14. II. REWARD: PLEASURE, RELAXATION, MATERIAL A. (Rom 27, 10) eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. B. OBEDIENCE - (Heb 5:9) And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, C. ATTENDANCE - (Heb 10:25) not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

  15. II. REWARD: PLEASURE, RELAXATION, MATERIAL D.BIBLE STUDY - (John 8:32) "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." E.SOUL WINNING - (Prov 11:30) The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who wins souls is wise.. F. BROTHERLY LOVE - (1 John 3:14a) we know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren.

  16. III. GUILT: OBLIGATION, RESPONSIBILITY A. (2 Cor 5:15) and He died for that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again, B. OBEDIENCE - (Acts 2:37-38) Now when they heard this: they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" {38} Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. C. ATTENDANCE - (Mat 18:20) 'For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them. D. BIBLE STUDY - (2 Tim 2:15) Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

  17. III. GUILT: OBLIGATION, RESPONSIBILITY E. SOUL WINNING - (Mat 18:11-14) "For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost. {12} What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying? {13} "And if he should find it, assuredly, I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray. {14} "Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish. F. BROTHERLY LOVE - (1 John 4:10-11) In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. {11} Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

  18. TRANSITION: WHAT IF I TOLD CLARA THAT I WAS WITH HER FOR THE ABOVE REASONS? A.Fear - what I would lose if I didn't have her B.Reward what I get out of the relationship C.Guilt - what I get emotionally from the relationship D.All of those reasons are basically selfish. It would be for what I get out of our relationship E. Clara wants me to be with her because of another motivation my love and appreciation F. God prefers for us to do his will because of our love and appreciation for him and what he has done for us.

  19. IV. LOVE: APPRECIATION, CONCERN A. (1 John 4:19) we love Him because He first loved us. B. OBEDIENCE - (John 14:15) "If you love Me, keep My commandments. C. ATTENDANCE - (1 John 4:20-21) If someone says, love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? {21} And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also. D. BIBLE STUDY - (Psa 119:48, 97) My hands also I will lift up to Your commandments, Which I love, And I will meditate on Your statutes....Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day E. SOUL WINNING - (James 5:19-20) Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, {20} let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.

  20. IV. LOVE: APPRECIATION, CONCERN F. BROTHERLY LOVE - (1 Cor 13:1-8) Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. {2} And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. {3} And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. {4} Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; {5} does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; {6} does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; {7} bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. {8} Love never fails.
