  3. BRITISH SYSTEM OF EDUCATION All children and young people between the ages 5 and 16 must get full-time education. State schools work from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 or 4 p.m. They have usually six weeks off in summer and some holidays during the school year ( at Christmas, Easter ). 3

  4. 3 and 4 year-old children receive nursery education in kindergartens ( about 47 % of them go there ). Primary Schools are for ages 5 to 11 and Secondary Schools for ages over 11. About 93 % of British pupils receive their education at state schools, the rest attend private or church schools. 4

  5. The principal examination at about the age of 16 is the General Certificate of Secondary Education ( GCSE ). Next some students can study at the universities. The English universities can be divided into three groups. 5

  6. A) Oxford and Cambridge they are the oldest and the most famous universities 6

  7. B) Redbrick Universities which were founded in 19 century. C) The new universities opend after 1960 ( Sussex, Kent, York ) 7

  8. AMERICAN SYSTEM OF EDUCATION In the USA there is not a national system of education. Each of the 50 states has own laws regulating education. Every child gets minimum 13 years of education. School begins at the age of 6. There are twelve grades in the school system. 8

  9. Pupils first go to the Elementary School and then to Secondary School. Secondary school - it generally means grades 9-12, these grades are called HIGH SCHOOL The goal of these studies is to get a high school diploma. 9

  10. The system of higher education consists of a) The University b) The technical training institution (six months-four years) c) The two-year or community college Each American university has its own curriculum. 10

  11. Among the most respected universities belong: Harward (1636 ), Yale (1701 ) 11
