BULLIES: Why should we care?
Who are the Victims? Already high levels of anxiety, insecurity, and low self- esteem; feel like a failure Victims show higher depression, anxiety, and social phobia as adults (especially for the girls), which is associated with self-harm PTSD from trauma associated with victimization More likely to react by crying or withdrawing when attacked More likely to explode some day in future violence More frequently come from families with maladaptive parenting, parental conflict, domestic violence Earlier the bullying, greater likelihood of committing self- harm and suicide in later teen years, even when accounting for home environment Bullying exacerbates impact of adverse family environments
Who are the Bullies Hyperactivity is common Frequently have HIGHER self-esteem Higher family teasing about appearance More destructive strategies to deal with problems (getting angry and aggressive when upset) Personalize negative statements to self more often Poorer school performance Higher use of drugs and alcohol Higher likelihood of gang involvement: criminal activity Fewer close friends: higher loneliness which leads to anger, rejection
Who are the BULLY/VICTIMS Provocative victims have ADHD and conduct problems More closely resemble the bullies More frequently acting out of anger or revenge, not to gain power or respect Lonely!
