  1. Cambodia Genocide MADELAINE SCHMIDT

  2. What is a Genocide A Genocide is an act of violence, targeting against one or more specific ethic, race, or nationality group. The word genocide , gets its name from the Greek word for race, and the Latin word cide which means killing. Genocide directly translates to race killing but can also be directed towards nationality and ethnic groups as well

  3. What Happened? The result of this Genocide was 25% of Cambodia s population. 17,000 people passed through the Tuol Sleng Centre and only 15 survived

  4. Where did it occur? This Genocide occurred in Kampuchea, Cambodia in South East Asia

  5. Who was the Target? The Khemer Rouge regime executed and arrested anyone with connections with the former Cambodian Government or foreign governments. Many professionals, intellectuals,, the Buddhist monkhood and the ethnic minorities were targeted as well. Ethnic Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese groups were involved. Also Cambodian Christians. The Khemer Rouge relocated minority groups, as well as banned the use of their languages.

  6. Why and how did it Occur? The Khemer Rouge had a goal to turn the country into a socialist agrarian republic. In 1976, he had changed the country name to Democratic Kampuchea. The Khemer Rouge then emptied the cities and forced Cambodia people to move into labour camps. These camps were located in the countryside and there were many executions as well as forced labour, physical abuse, malnutrition, and disease took place in all of them

  7. What Was the Worlds Response? The USA, United Nations, and Vietnam helped the Cambodian people during the Genocide. The USA set up camps in Thailand and provided them with food. They set up sponsors around the world. Also, people who could escape were given a free plane ride as well as a place to live. Vietnam helped by forcing the Khemer Rouge out of Cambodia. A part that was delayed was when the United Nations responded to the Genocide by creating a court which convicted the leaders of the Khemer Rouge for their crimes, but it took many years to start up and many leaders including Pol Pot had passed away by the time this was established. If they coulf have started earlier more people could have been saved.
