Introduction The Capacity Development for Country Code Top-Level Domain Registries (ccTLDs) in Africa project is under the Coalition for Digital Africa and ITU-D Partner2Connect Digital Coalition (P2C), partners namely ICANN, AfTLD, the International Telecommunication Association Fran aise de Nommage Internet en Coop ration (Afnic), Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC) and LusNIC, Association of the Portuguese speaking ccTLD s (mostly based in Africa). Purpose of the CDA ccTLD Track The purpose of the project is to build the capacity of selected country code top-level domain registries to support the growth of digital economies in their respective countries. The focus of the track is on capacity development in DNS businesses and ccTLDs in selected countries with the ultimate goal of enhancing security and resilience of in DNS infrastructure in Africa as well as providing an engagement platform for national stakeholders such as governments, the private sector, academia, and civil society. Objectives Identify needs of ccTLD operators in collaboration with relevant stakeholders such as governments, regulators, registrars, and registrants. Assist governments, regulators, and selected ccTLD registries in the development of growth strategies that include the development of partnerships and networks of national registrars aimed at developing ccTLD ecosystems in the selected countries. Objectives Assist ccTLD operators to develop capacity development objectives and plans aligned with the national strategy. Offer tailored capacity development activities led by industry experts through online courses, hands-on workshops, webinars, peer exchanges, and learning-by- doing activities. On boarding of the 10 countries Introductory Webinar was successfully held on 14th February 2024 AFTLD on boarded a project Coordinator in April Weekly partner meetings held since April to coordinate the ccTLD track Communications platforms have been developed to enhance coordination among partners and beneficiary countries Africa Top Level Domains Organization
Target Countries Participants have been drawn from 10 countries in Africa namely Angola, Benin, Burundi, Comoros, Congo Brazzaville, Madagascar, Niger, Togo, Zimbabwe, and Gambia. Africa Top Level Domains Organization
Sessions Covered: Business & Marketing Training Kigali, Rwanda. Governance and Policy Management, including legal and regulatory constraints, registry models and the relationship between ccTLDs and ICANN/Public Technical Identifiers (PTI). Sales and Marketing, including the domain name market, stakeholders, and marketing strategies Developing Domain Name sage, including identifying and developing opportunities tailored to the needs of market users and positioning registries as valuable sources of economic opportunity Performance metrics. Sessions Covered: Technical Training Nairobi- Kenya. The DNS ecosystem and registry architecture Understanding Unix and Linux Forward zone and reverse zone configuration and delegation DNS operations, debugging and troubleshooting DNS software An overview of DNS security and resilience Africa Top Level Domains Organization
Expected Outcome Growth in ccTLD registrations (assessed after 6 to 12 months after changes are implemented). Monitoring and evaluation improvement in ccTLD operations and governance in the 10 selected ccTLDs aimed at tracking Africa Top Level Domains Organization
