Background: The Assisted Decision Making (Capacity) Act 2015 is due to commence in June 2022. This legislation is rights based and outlines a system of supports for individuals who may have difficulty with decision making. Occupational Therapists have a role to play in the interdisciplinary assessment of Decision Making Capacity (DMC) and are often involved in DMC assessments for independent living in the acute setting. Occupational Therapists in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda formed a working group in 2021 to streamline the recording of comprehensive and holistic assessment outcomes. Aim To review current practice within the Occupational Therapy (OT) team in relation to assessments used; the format of recording and current knowledge of the Decision Making Capacity (DMC) Act. To support the interdisciplinary assessment of DMC around independent living through easier access and interpretation of information. To provide a document with clear outcomes of the OT assessment in a succinct and consistent format which would act as a support tool for interdisciplinary assessment of DMC.
