Why do I record my Library Skills Sessions? Geoff Morgan Thurs 21 June 2018
Why? Why? Why? Because it is there. It is easy to set up. Provides opportunities for self-reflection. Growth in distance/open learning courses. The introduction of the Degree Apprenticeship. Marketing? TEL TEG
What do I use to capture the session? I use Mediasite - to record the screen and sound. Free to Brookes staff and very easy to use. Offers high good quality definition and has video editor. I use an omnidirectional microphone (picks up sound from all directions equally for recording audio. You can however use Screencastify you can obtain a limited service for free where the video is recorded with a water mark otherwise circa 20 year subscription.
Opportunities for self-reflection and other uses It enables me to think critically about my presentation style - voice, tone, speed, repetition, and pauses ums arrs etcs. Assess how the students are engaging with the session Note it does not pick up body language- grimaces, smiles yawns etc. It captures questions asked and discussions - useful for generating a FAQ list
Youtube - why? Automatically generates subtitles (unedited example) which can be edited manually - an example edited subtitles Provides analytics of viewers - how many times viewed and the demographics. Provides a tool for feedback - viewers can like the video or subscribe to the channel and offer comments. Thumbnails are available to quickly find what you need on the video - so really it does not matter how long it is. There is plenty of space for you to write an abstract/description of the session
Quotes Self-reflection Sherin and van Es suggests videos taken during lessons in teaching practice are trustworthy data for student teachers to make a post- lesson self reflection that is grounded in the actual records rather than uncertain recollections ( 2005, cited in Kong, Shroff and Hung 2009) Researchers also find that student teachers show significant growth in the levels of reflective thoughts about their teaching work, under a guiding framework for self reflection, after browsing video recordings of lessons in teaching practice (Kong Schroff anf Hung, 2004). Electronic platforms allow student teachers to externalise their reflective thoughts, based on the accurate video recorded data from teaching practice activities. This approach allows student teachers to actively construct applicable knowledge about classroom instruction, develop reflective practices on their teaching work, and take responsibility for their own learning (Kong Schroff and Hung, 2009l To help enhance teaching Moss states that video is different from other learning technologies, because it offers the benefit of using the visual perception, that powerful but neglected sense in new ways. A moving image can help someone to see a process or realize how something works, moves, or performs. (1983, cited in Vieira, Lopes and Soares, 2014) Also Goodyear and Steeple argues that video can present in a clear and striking manner descriptions to articulate tacit information and knowledge hard to describe through text. (1998, cited in Vieira, Lopes and Soares, 2014)
My own perceptions Horror!! at hearing my own voice. All those ums and arrs and repetition. Have been listening to Just a Minute on Radio 4 to impove on my ability oto be articulate. Excitement at how it can be used. To generate shorter podcasts, FAQ lists, user experience, self reflection etc.
