Seeking jobs Summer 2020 Begin applying to jobs and PhD programmes Foot in the door Any role, anywhere Summer 2021 Innumerable rejections and 2 interviews Tried to adapt applications to my experience Often told that a more experienced candidate was chosen Autumn 2021 Final attempts
Technician role Winter 2021 Accepted to Technician role Started as res tech in Jan 2022 intent on progressing to PhD September 2022 Began PhD application process Didn t really understand the importance of tech roles Understanding PhD funding streams and affordability February 2023 Funding application accepted
My thoughts Enjoyment in technical role Fortunate to have support from senior academics I made it clear that I intended to move onto PhD Work hard to find people who can help you progress
