Career opportunities in early childhood ORGANISATIONS OFFERING CAREERS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT 1. TVET COLLEGES TVET COLLEGES PROVIDE TRAINING IN VOCATIONAL AND OCCUPATIONAL PROGRAMMES. THE ED L4 QUALIFICATION IS A NATIONAL CERTIFICATE VOCATIONAL IN EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT: OPTIONS AFTER COMPLETING STUDIES ARE TO FIND EMPLOYMENT, TO FURTHER STUDIES OR TO OPEN OWN BUSINESS. 2. UNIVERSITIES: TRADITIONAL AND CORRESPONDENCE UNISA OFFER MANY QUALIFICATIONS FOR ECD STUDIES. MOST UNISA PROGRAMMES ARE CORRESPONDENCE COURSES. FULL TIME CONTACT SESSIONS ARE THE NORM AT TRADITIONAL UNIVERSITIES. 3. NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATIONS THERE ARE SEVERAL NGO S PROVIDING ECD TRAINING. THIS TRAINING CAN BE NQF REGISTERED OR SHORT SKILLS PROGRAMMES. FUNDING IS RECEIVED FROM PRIVATE OR STATE DEPARTMENTS. NGO S ARE IMPORTANT PARTNERS IN EDUCATIONAL TRANSFORMATION IN SA. 4. PRIVATE TRAINING PROVIDERS TRAINING CAN BE FULL TIME, PART TIME OR CORRESPONDENCE: E.G. INTEC COLLEGE.
Career opportunities in early childhood CAREER CHOICES AND CAREER PATHS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT WHITE PAPER 5 (EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT) SUGGESTS THE FOLLOWING TO IMPROVE THE ECD SECTOR: * OUT A MECHANISM IN PLACE FOR THE PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION OF ECD PRACTITIONERS AND ENSURE THEY ARE REGISTERED WITH THE SOUTH AFRICAN COUNCIL OF EDUCATORS. * IMPROVE THE INEQUITIES IN THE QUALIFICATION OF ECD PRACTITIONERS. * ENSURE THAT THERE IS AN ACCREDITATION SYSTEM IN PLACE FOR ECD PRACTITIONERS. IT IS IMPORTANT TO PROVIDE A CAREER PATH FOR ECD PRACTITIONERS IN SA FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: * PROVIDE STRUCTURES THAT CAN HELP TO DEVELOP COMMON NORMS AND RULES FOR LICENSING OF ECD PRACTITIONERS. * TO SHOW HOW ECD PRACTITIONERS CAN BE PROMOTED, AND AT THE SAME TIME DEVELOP QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIALISATIONS TO PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ECD PRACTITIONER. * TO HELP ECD PRACTITIONERS IN LOW WAGE EARNING JOBS TO MAKE PROGRESSION INTOMORE FORMAL EMPLOYMENT.
Career opportunities in early childhood A WELL ORGANISED ECD SECTOR WILL ALLOW FOR ACCESS INTO THE ECD SECTOR, AT ALL LEVELS, OF WELL TRAINED AND COMPETENT STAFF. REGISTRATION WITH A PROFESSIONAL BODY IS ALSO A WAY TO SAFEGUARD STANDARDS WITHIN THE ECD PROFESSION: THIS WILL RAISE THE STATUS OF ECD PRACTITIONERS. THE NATIONAL INTEGRATED PLAN (NIP) FOR ECD SUPPORTS THE IDEA THAT ALL ECD PRACTITIONERS SHOULD BE REGARDED PROFESSIONALS WITH A CLEAR CAREER PATH. THIS PLAN AIMS TO PROMOTE OTHER TYPES OF JOBS FOR ECD WORKERS AT ALL LEVELS. THE MAIN AIM OF THE NIP IS ALSO THAT THE PROVISION OF ECD SERVICES IN SA IS APPROACHED FROM A MULTI SECTOR APPROACH WHERE THE DEPARTMENTS OF HEALTH, EDUCATION AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT ALL COLLABORATE TO ENSURE THAT THE DIVERSE SITUATIONS AND NEEDS OF THE CHILDREN OF SA FROM 0 9 YEARS ARE MET. AREAS TO BE ADDRESSED ARE IMMUNISATION, NUTRITION, QUALITY LEARNING PROGRAMMES , REFERRAL SERVICES FOR HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES AND TO MONITOR THE DELIVERY OF QUALITY CARE TO CHILDREN IN ECD SETTINGS.
SOUTH AFRICAN COUNCIL OF EDUCATORS (SACE) IS A PROFESSIONAL COUNCIL THAT AIMS TO ENHANCE THE STATUS OF THE TEACHING PROFESSION AND PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATORS AND THEIR PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT. THE MAIN FUNCTIONS OF THE COUNCIL ARE TO REGISTER EDUCATORS, PROMOTE THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATORS AND MAINTAIN AND PROTECT ETHICAL AND PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS.
