Student Pharmacist Summer Placement (SPSP) In General Practice
Career trajectories for Clinical Pharmacists in General Practice: Where we need to target to start building the talent pipeline with the specific skills in General Practice Clinical Director/ Portfolio Career Established Practice or PCN Pharmacist, Lead Pharmacist/ Partner Newly Qualified or New to Practice or PCN Pharmacist Foundation year (pre- registration) Where the majority of Pharmacists enter General Practice Community, Hospital, Industry or Other Student 2
Overarching aims of the placement: For more university students to become aware and understand the role of careers in Primary Care. To engage and develop a pipeline of confident and talented future Practice Pharmacists in C&P To utilise learning to inform future placement projects for other new to practice roles Raise Awareness of Clinical Pharmacy in General Practice as a career path Explore impact of pilot for shaping future placement projects Develop future local talent pipeline For practicesto see the importance of developing the role of Practice Pharmacists for the future & influencing early career development opportunities To utilise the placement as a means of influencing more Practices to take on student placements including pre- registration/ foundation year Pharmacists To engage and develop a network of confident and proactive PracticePharmacist mentors to support future student pharmacists
Activities & Assessments To increaseunderstanding of the role of Clinical Pharmacist and the wider MDT working in Primary Care and the importance of integrated working To improve confidence and expand experience of the practical application of clinical and consultation skills Understanding processinvolved in clinical assessments Observing& working on Reception Patient contact (face-to-face or remote) Shadowing & observation Research & reading as part of independent study Audit Projects & Presentations CaseBased Discussion 6 CPDs To improve communication skills and experience of presenting complex information to different audiences To increaseconfidence in developing evidence-based approach to judgement and decision making 4
Example timetable: Placement Design: . TimetableOverview Student Pharmacists in their 2nd or 3rdyear offered a paid 6 week placement in a host practice. Induction to General Practice Setting aims and objectives with Supervisor Start identified tasks e.g. admin, reception work and skills development (meet the team). Weekly session with Project Advisors Identifying audit project Shadow one Practice Pharmacist clinic Continue with identified tasks e.g. admin, reception work and skills development Weekly session with Project Advisors Week1 Students will be supervised by a Host Practice Pharmacist who offers feedback, supervision and mentoring to increase their confidence, skills and knowledge of the role of Practice Pharmacists in Primary Care. Week2 Continue audit project Shadow Practice Pharmacistclinic Continue with identified tasks Shadow GP clinic Preparing for Employment Weekly session with Project Advisors Students will be supported by two project advisors who took part in the placement in previous years Week3 Students will be offered opportunities to shadow the wider MDT so that they can understand the complexity of the ways of working in General Practice. Complete audit project Continue with tasks and shadowing opportunities Complete a case based discussion Weekly session with Project Advisors Week4 Practice delivering audit project presentation Opportunities for crafting your Pharmacy career in Primary Care and Pre- reg event Weekly session with Project Advisors Student Pharmacists will be based in Practice Week5 Complete final tasks and skills development, reflection and evaluation activities Deliver final audit project presentation at closing event Weekly session with Project Advisors Asemi-structured approach to activities is advised by the project team to allow Practices the flexibility and freedom to identify their own priorities. Week6 All students and host practice pharmacists are offered by the project team: An inductionevent Catch ups withthe project team End of placement reflectionsession 5
Student & Pharmacist Experience from C&P pilot 2022 Manystudents reported that they knew very little about Primary Care previously as it was not covered in their course All the students foundthe summer placement a positive learning experience Overall students were now more likely to pursue a career as a Clinical Pharmacist in General Practice All students reported that if they were to pursue a career in Primary Care in the future they would work for their Practice Networking and building future connections was also an important outcome for students Pharmacists felt motivated to take part in the part in the placement because they wanted to gain further insight into Practices that do nottheir mentoring skillsMost Pharmacists reported that the presenceof students had been a positive influence to their practice and would participate in the placement again currently offer pre-reg places said placement was a good test-run for identifying the likely needs, challenges and processes needed for pre-reg C&P Metabolic (@cnp.metabolic) Instagram photos and videos 7
