Research Incentive Grants Provide Early Career Researchers with the opportunity to lead a short research project Projects may be stand alone or expected to lead to a more extensive piece of work Planned research must: Be of excellent quality Enable the principal investigator to develop a new project or line of research Be likely to lead to high quality outputs and outcomes The applicant must demonstrate that, without the support of the Trust, the planned research would not take place or would be significantly delayed

Scheme outline Funding of between 1,500 and 15,000 is available Grants are tenable between 1 and 12 months Two deadlines each year: 11thMarch projects begin from 1stJuly 11thSeptember projects begin after 1stJanuary Projects must start within 12 months of award date You may make up to 2 applications over a 5 year period but on only one application at a time There are no themes, projects may be in any discipline

Applicant Eligibility Must be employed by a Scottish University Contract must Allow you time and resource for own independent research Extend beyond the life of the grant You must be planning to remain in post for at least 3 months after end of the grant Early Career Researcher: Within 7 years of PhD submission OR Within 7 years of starting independent academic career (pro-rata for part- time, career breaks, secondments to industry) ASK if you are unsure

  6. Whats not funded Established lines of research Projects that are directed at confirmation and dissemination of previously acquired research results. Projects pursued from year to year over a period of time Projects arising from previous pilot studies Projects to establish a network Projects focused on digitising, cataloguing or archiving existing data Projects centred on running conferences, workshops, summer schools etc. Knowledge exchange projects

  7. Eligible Costs Eligible costs include: travel, accommodation, and subsistence research support staff and other technical/administrative staff surveys Consumables and equipment disseminating results eg publication or conferences (maximum 15% the requested budget) The following costs are not eligible: the applicant s (and co-investigator s) own time or buy-out of their time indirect overhead costs and bench/desk fees insurance cover 15% of

  9. How do Carnegie Assess applications? Projects will be assessed on: Overall Quality Contextualising the proposed research How does the proposal fit within the current work in the field Any logical flaws, omissions or contradictions in the application Additionally following criterion is also considered: Significance & Originality of the project Feasibility in terms of resources and time Suitability of the applicant to undertake the project Anticipated outcomes and expected outputs

Criterion 1: Significance and Originality Expectations A clearly specified research question/hypothesis Addressing a significant scientific, societal or intellectual issue An original research project (from an international perspective) Clearly filling gaps in, or extending, existing knowledge Potential to advance the field or expected to impact on industry, culture or public policy or more widely Is there a prospect of opening up new areas of study? Is there potential to further strengthen research in a particular field within the Scottish universities (strategically significant)?

Criterion 2: Feasibility Expectations Applicant has the necessary expertise and experience Clear and realistic rationale for proposed methodology, timescale and resources Specified research methodology and activities are appropriate for the project to yield results Applicant has considered potential pitfalls or difficulties and how these could best be handled Requested funds are appropriate for the scope of the project and essential for its successful completion The budget demonstrates value for money

  12. Criterion 3: Outcomes and outputs Expectations Proposed research outcomes are relevant and of sufficient scope The academic outputs are anticipate to be of high quality and sufficient strength, e.g. likely to be included in future REF Project is likely to open up a new area of research and/or lead to preparation of larger grant applications to other funders Anticipated outcomes and outputs likely to have an impact through industrial applications, cultural events, or public policy development

  13. Criterion 4: Overall quality An overall quality assessment on the basis of the above criteria The will take form of an overall score, arrived at on basis of proposal s strengths and weaknesses in relation to each individual criterion Scoring: 0.0 through 6.0

The Application form In pairs share your lay summary and provide constructive feedback on the following sections of the form: Project Summary this should be a lay summary does it make sense to a non-subject specialist Outcomes and outputs - are they relevant, high quality, likely to open new areas of research, likely to have impact?

  15. In-Kind Support You should include in-kind support from the University. This is: Cost of your salary for the time you will spend on the grant This is made up of; Salary Estates (this is the cost of the office space in the University) Indirect costs (cost of utilising the university s central services, such as the library, IT services, etc) RFS will provide these figures for you

  16. Case for Support Must be font Arial 11, line space at least 1.15, 2cm margins Maximum 3 pages plus 1 page for references Should address The issue, problem or topic you intend to address Background and rationale for the research Aims and objectives - keep these SMART Research hypotheses or questions Methodology Feasibility, significance and potential for innovation Relevance to Scottish Universities and academic community DO NOT attach anything else to the case for support this may invalidate your application

  17. Who can help with your application? Research Financial Services will provide costs associated with employing a research assistant/fellow on your grant They will check all other costs and the justification of resource section Wide range of facilities are available such as IT facilities, Safe Haven etc School Ethics officer Your peer reviewers give then sufficient time to review your proposal Business Development Officer The Carnegie Trust if you re not sure ask them directly

  18. The application process Discuss proposal with Director of Research Contact RFS and facilities to obtain costs Have your proposal peer reviewed Obtain internal approval via eAAP Complete the full online form Submit your application

Common errors Not reading the guidance Failing to answer fully the questions set by the funder Typos and grammatical errors Project timetable section being too general Technical language in the Project Summary and unexplained acronyms Giving impression of a lack of planning on how/where/when/who Justification of resource section lacking detail Requested costs not matching Justification of Resource section Dissemination costs exceeding the 15% limit

  21. A good application Uses positive and confident language Will clearly set out aims or goals to be achieved from the research Incorporates feedback from your circle of contacts (informal and formal) Is realistic - do not promise too much Explains how ethical issues will be addressed Explains the impact to the non-academic audience Illustrates why you are the best person to do this research Is clearly set out using concise language that can be understood by non- specialists

  22. Final Tips Check through your application Is it clear and logically set out? Could it leave the reviewer with unanswered questions? Allow enough time For you to develop the proposal and complete the application form For your Peer Reviewers to review your proposal For your Business Development Officer and Research Financial Services to review your application
