Example from Bioethical Literary Analysis Essay (Brave New World) To begin, the drug in the novel, soma, makes a significant connection to how bioengineering is used in reality to manipulate people s sense of joy. According to page 61 of Huxley s novel, The Brave New World, Bernard is talking to Lenina in the helicopter and says, Yes, Everybody s happy nowadays. We begin giving the children that at five. But wouldn t you like to be free to be happy in some other way, Lenina? In your own way, for example; not in everybody else s way (pg. 61). The soma drug makes people think that they are happy even though they are not truly happy in their own ways and it truly manipulates their feelings. This scenario relates to events that happen in the modern day where medication and genetic engineering can be used to influence a person s feelings. According to an article written by Cook about neurosurgeons that found a way to use bioengineering to change a person s feelings, Chinese neurosurgeons are treating addictions by destroying a region of the brain which feels pleasure. But, reports Time magazine, damaging the brain region involved in addictive desires risks permanently ending the entire spectrum of natural longings and emotions, including the ability to feel joy (Cook, 2012). This is quite a dangerous procedure because it can take away someone s joy forever, which is a big tradeoff. This discovery from the real world and the drug from the novel are some methods that immensely focus on altering an individual s joy and ability to have feelings.
CECEC REQUIREMENTS 9-10 sentences (majority commentary) Internal citation for evidence Context for evidence No personal pronoun usage I, me, we, us, you, etc. Clear focus on the cause s relationship to the central problem Transitional phrasing between evidences and commentaries For more specifics on CEC writing, see the CEC Power Point on Edmodo in the Course Documents Section at the top
