Causes of WWI M A N I A
Militarism Militarism = the massive build-up of the military, with the intention of using it instead of diplomacy. Germany used Conscription, a mandatory draft-not voluntary Examples = Britain, France, Germany, and Russia all spent large sums of money on new weapons and warships.
Alliances Triple Entente (Later known as the Allies) (WE WILL BE PART OF THE ALLIES) France Britain Russia Triple Alliance Germany Austria-Hungary Italy Later with the Ottoman Empire will be the Central Powers
Nationalism Major powers like Germany, Britain, and France acted in their own best interests. S. and E. European nations like Serbia wanted their own independence and would fight against their mother countries. Russia would back up Slavic nations like Serbia.
Imperialism Europeans had been building empires for centuries; these supplied the imperial powers raw materials and provided markets for manufactured goods. As Germany industrialized, it competed with France and Britain in the contest for colonies. Britain and France almost went to war over colonies in Africa in 1898. In 1898, the US took several colonies from Spain as a result of the Spanish American War. In 1905, Japan defeated Russia for control of Korea and Manchuria.
IMPERIALISM The policy of extending a nation s authority over other countries by economic, political or military means. (Strong wealthy countries over the smaller weak ones)

Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip shot and killed Ferdinand and his wife Sophie. 7/28-Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. 8/1 Germany, obligated by treaty to support Austria- Hungary, declared war on Russia. 8/3, Germany declared war on Russia s ally France. The Great War began!
