In the CE 491/492 Graduation Design Project, students will undertake two distinct projects focusing on practical engineering design. The projects emphasize sustainable practices and real-world application, requiring students to propose design processes and solutions for specific civil engineering systems. Supervisors guide students through topic selection, proposal submission, and project presentation. The curriculum aligns with criteria for evaluating bachelor engineering programs, emphasizing the development of creative solutions to complex engineering problems while considering realistic constraints. Weekly plans include advisor assignments, project topic selection, and interim presentations.

  1. CE 491/492 Graduation Design Project Overview

  2. CE 491/492 GraduationDesign Project Overview Starting in the Fall 2024 semester, students enrolled in CE 491 and CE 492 will be required to complete two distinct graduation design projects. While the CE 492 project may build on the CE 491 project, a separate and substantially differentdesignreport must besubmittedfor eachcourse. CE 491 and CE 492 courses introduce students in engineering design by engaging them in practical, real-world projects. It equips students with a comprehensive understanding of current engineering practices while emphasizing the need to apply sustainable methods and sound principles to their designs. Depending on the project, students maywork independentlyor collaboratein teams (maximum4 students in a team). Based on the problem selected, students will propose a design process for the problem specific civil engineering system or processand applythe proposeddesignto the selectedproblemunderthe supervisionof theiradvisors. Before choosing a supervisor and a graduation design project topic, students are encouraged to explore the professors'web pagesto becomefamiliarwiththeir researchareas. Students are required to select their supervisor during the registration period and arrange a weekly meeting time with them duringthe firstweek of the semester. A graduation design project topic must be submitted by the third week to the supervisors, followed by a proposal form submissioninthe fourth week. An interim presentation of the project proposal and preliminary design will take place in the 10th week. The final designwillbepresented duringthe finalexaminationperiodat the endof the semester. Curriculum 5.5 The curriculum must prepare students for engineering practice, through a major design experience, based on the knowledge and skills acquired in earlier course work and incorporating engineering standards and realistic constraints. Definitions vii. Complex Problem: A comprehensive problem which, concerns various stakeholders with different needs, leading to important results in different contexts, and one that requires for its solution some or all of the following: in-depth engineering knowledge, o abstract thinking, creative use of fundamental engineering principles, research-based knowledge at the forefront of the relevant engineering discipline, the development of a new model or method. viii. Complex System, Process, Device, or Product: A system, process, device, or product that contains multiple components and various sub-systems and/or may relate to more than one discipline; and whose analysis and design poses a complex problem. ix. Realistic constraints and conditions in engineering design: Factors such as economics, environmental issues, sustainability, manufacturability, ethics, health, safety, and social, legal and political dimensions, in accordance with the nature of the deign. https://www.mudek.org.tr/doc/en/MUDEK-Evaluation_Criteria_%282.2.1-25.01.2020%29.pdf
