Presentation Transcript
October is a month in which we celebrate inspirational individuals, events and history of people within the black and ethnic community. BLACK HISTORY MONTH The UK has celebrated Black History Month every October since 1987 It is an annual event that also celebrates the contribution made by the generations of those of African and Caribbean descent living in the UK who have shaped Britain s national and cultural life.
Black people were historically treated differently in the UK because of their skin colour, excluded from certain jobs and housing. BLACK HISTORY The 1968 Race Relations Act made it illegal to discriminate against people on the grounds of colour in an attempt to ensure that Black people did not suffer discrimination due to the colour of their skin. However the struggle to end discrimination and racial violence is one that continues today.
