Awards INLAND EMPIRE NATIONAL QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT FEBRUARY 25-26, 2022
District Committee: Vicky Hyde, Committee Chair Dave Carlson David Smith Don Hendrixson Sara Hyde
Thank you Coaches Judges All those who volunteered as tribute so that others could earn a spot at Nationals. This isn t about schools; this is about the Inland Empire District. We may be small, but we are here for each other.
Were impressed! 24 ballots sent at 6 p.m. more than half were started within an hour! Special shoutout to Giovanni Caputo, who had his finished (complete with comments) within the hour.
Whaaaat? NOT A SINGLE PUSHED BALLOT. NOT ONE!
And, most importantly Thank you. All of you. We know that these aren t the ideal circumstances, and yet we are so grateful that we are able to compete. Thank you for your patience as technology is a wonderful thing until it s not. It is the commitment of the coaches, judges, and competitors that makes this possible.
Two years ago This tournament was the last live tournament we attended. Two weeks later, the state and nation shut down.
Special Awards The committee loves to read your nominations and regrets that we can only choose one for each award. Think ahead to who you want to nominate next year!
Volunteer of the Year-Previous 2022 ??? 2021 Natalie Soderquist 2020 Alena Johnson 2019 Marcos Naves 2018 Robyn Johnson
Volunteer of the Year 2022 In 2003, Morgan DeWinter needed a judge for their team. And so it began. That s how I got into speech and debate, and why we re here today. It s Morgan s fault that their younger sibling joined the team that year, and she s now the Tabroom goddess that she is. Morgan has been invested in Speech and Debate for more than 20 years, and for the past 11 has helped the Chiawana program as a judge through countless miles of bus rides. Two years ago, they lost track of how many SPAR rounds they judged at Ferris, despite being exhausted, because the kids needed a judge. Morgan has also been generous at sharing the benefits of a philosophy minor with my LD debaters, and anyone else who will listen. This award is way overdue, but I am so pleased to be giving it now to my Practice Child (it was their After-Dinner Speaking entry senior year) .

New Coach of the Year-Previous 2022 ??? 2020 Albert Miller, Thorp HS
New Coach of the Year 2022 Jessi Robledo has been tireless in reviving a team that existed in only fits and starts for the last decade. She has been a strong advocate for her students in her school and her district. Her students have embraced the challenges of being brand new at an activity where they were not able to learn by watching their competitors, as we have continued in virtual mostly asynchronous competition this year. And they ve been successful! I had the pleasure of judging her Public Forum team in PF finals at my home tournament, and they had the poise and confidence of a much more seasoned team. Showing a thirst to know more about how things should be done and done well Jessi has not been shy or embarrassed about asking for help. She is eager to do it right and serve her students in the best way she can, so she can set them up to be successful. We have worked together via Zoom multiple times so she would be able to coach and judge well. She has also set up an evening for her students to perform for their families and friends. But she s not keeping it to herself; she has invited our two other local teams to participate.

Student of the Year 2022 Kylie Heaton never had the opportunity to be a novice. Her freshman year, she was thrown into open public forum because her team captain didn t have a partner. In Kylie s second year, she was thrown into policy because an older student needed a partner. She ended up qualifying to nationals her first year in policy. In her third year, she and her partner were finally able to compete at nationals and her partner graduated. In this, her senior year, Kylie took over as captain. We had four young freshman novice policy kids. Recognizing that her charges would be better off working together for four years, she worked with them and switched to Lincoln Douglas debate for herself. For a beginning LD competitor, she did quite well for herself. She is District LD champion in her first year and is on her way to State, and competed this weekend for an opportunity to return to Nationals. Kylie has always put her teammates first, and yet has been a champion in all the events she has tackled.
How this works Qualifiers get to compete live in Louisville, KY this June 12-17 or may choose to compete in the online supplemental events tournament, in which case, an alternate will get to go to Louisville. (Covid precautions require vaccination, masks.) Each school can also enter two students who competed at districts (but didn t qualify) to compete in Louisville supplementals or online supplementals. If you did not qualify at this tournament, NSDA is holding a nationwide last-chance tournament online May 5-7.
How this works We are announcing only the Qualifier and alternate. Many of you qualified in two events! You can only go in one. Preferences were submitted before the tournament. Qualifiers must go in a partner event over an individual event if they qualify in both. Full rankings and second alternates can be seen after the tournament in the results.
