  1. Chairs role Information for Chairs is spelled out in the University Guidelines Document on academic affairs website and in Canvas. Common Mistakes: Naming names when the candidate has waived the right to see letters Failure to address no, absent, abstaining votes >20% Failure to address conflicts between student evals and peer evals Inconsistency between annual evals and the promotion letter Regurgitating the packet versus documenting evidence of distinction Not contextualizing

  2. Chairs role Provide context: unit s status, national position, aspirations, directions, needs Critical review and analysis of evidence (not simply repetition of the case). Link this assessment to unit criteria. Evaluate quality and impact of scholarly/creative work Evaluate volume of scholarship/creative activity Clarify candidate s contributions to collaborative projects Respond to problems in the record- don t ignore them Help readers understand the quality and impact of journals/juried exhibitions Citation counts Data on quality of journals/other venues (e.g., rejection rates, if official journal of national association, ranking of presses in the field, etc.) Review of books Competitive grants (and reputation/quality of funding agency)

Chairs role Comparison to peers nationally (in candidate s cohort or recently tenured cohort) present comparative data reflecting quality and level of productivity Teaching effectiveness include and discuss summary of teaching evaluations, mentoring activities, peer review or other evidence of teaching/mentoring effectiveness Interdisciplinary collaborations Include info from chair of collaborative unit(s) clarify nature of collaboration (e.g., research, student mentoring) Evaluation of quality and impact of scholarship from perspective of second field

  6. CBA-Chairs role The chair shall report the departmental assessments on the Nominee Information Cover Sheet of the dossier (i.e., for, against, abstaining, and absent). The number of faculty providing assessments for, against, abstaining, and absent shall equal the total number of faculty members of the department eligible to participate in this process according to this collective bargaining agreement. Department Chair's Review and Recommendation. After reviewing the candidate's dossier, the department chair shall submit an evaluative letter assessing the candidate's qualifications with reference to the department's written discipline-specific clarifications of the University's tenure criteria and make a positive or a negative recommendation. The chair's letter may explain or clarify such issues as exceptional assignments, unique contributions or unusual assessments.

  7. Regulations-Chairs role Spread throughout the regulation. The chairperson or equivalent administrator shall review the nomination and report the results of the faculty vote, the results of his or her review, and his or her recommendation of the candidate and to the appropriate dean or director.

  8. Other Fall Responsibility Junior faculty mentoring program and special review for faculty in the tenure probationary period. UF Regulation 7.010 (a) Each college and equivalent academic unit shall establish a mentoring program for faculty in the tenure probationary period as defined in University of Florida Regulation 7.019. This must include consultation assessing the faculty member s progress toward tenure. No college or equivalent academic unit mentoring program shall require any written assessments by the mentor.
