  2. PMI SP Procurement: Challenges and Considerations Eligibility for PMI procurement: PMI-procured SP requires a restricted commodity approval from USAID prior to procurement. To obtain approval, PMI commodities should be at least one of the following: WHO Pre-Qualified Stringent Regulatory Authority (SRA) Approved Procured through a USAID approved wholesaler Country registration often required. Presentations procured: Movement away from blister pack presentations towards 100 and 1000 tablet bottles Formulation: dispersible vs. non-dispersible Support to manufacturing in sub-Saharan Africa Support to manufacturers to attain approval Challenges: domestic market, cost implications, time to achieve WHO PQ and cost, etc. U.S. PRESIDENT S MALARIA INITIATIVE 2

General SP Procurement: Challenges and Considerations Shift to partner government procurement: positive in terms of sustainability, but accompanied by a variety of challenges When PMI is not procuring, we support in other ways to ensure quality-assured SP is purchased: Support to governments to ensure procurements take place (both on-time and in appropriate quantities) Visibility of relevant stakeholders of those orders Support to manufacturers to ensure that there are viable options Regulatory and pharmaceutical systems strengthening U.S. PRESIDENT S MALARIA INITIATIVE 4
