  4. URBAN SEARCH & RESCUE (USAR) Urban Search and Rescue is a specialised emergency services field that deals with the location, extrication and initial medical stabilisation of victims in natural and man-made disasters. USAR teams conduct search and rescue operations in collapsed or unstable structures and provide emergency medical care to trapped and victims. The International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG) under the umbrella of the United Nations (UN) facilitates coordination between the various international USAR teams deployed to countries experiencing devastating events.

  5. How do we cross the bridge?

  6. Response by Gift of the Givers We work in partnership with the South African government (DIRCO) for virtually all international projects. Team members are from governmental and private services which consist of Rescue Technicians, Paramedics, Engineers, Trauma Surgeons, Orthopaedic surgeons, Vascular surgeons, Anesthetists, Wound care specialist, Dentists and other medical specialists etc. As a Non governmental organization (NGO), Gift of the Givers DO NOT form part of INSARAG. We are considered as neutral during response as we can reach areas outside the restrictions of INSARAG.

  7. Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) Team USAR response in a cycle that includes the following technical phases: - Preparedness; Should the team have a single function, or is expertise needed in multiple disciplines? - Mobilization, - Operations, - Demobilization and Post-Mission.

  8. Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) Team Urban search-and-rescue is considered a multi-hazard discipline. We pride ourselves in speed and efficiency of response and in many disasters we are the first in the world to respond. Teams perform complex rescue operations within hazardous environment. Incidents experience shows that survival rate is higher if a response is within 7 days and the corresponding services should be planned accordingly.

  9. Beyond the Rubble Approach Economic issues can lead to humanitarian crises or humanitarian crises can lead to economic downfalls. This is to assist those affected with rehabilitation post disaster. Consisting from rescue & recovery operations, humanitarian aid and the rebuilding of critical infrastructure including of schools, hospitals, boreholes, building of desalination plants. We select and purchase the aid items, hire our own planes, send our own aid workers and medical teams and distribute the aid personally. Our aid is not handed over to third parties to distribute on our behalf.

  10. Beyond the Rubble Approach The aftermaths of natural disasters can lead to a significant decrease in natural resources while making the region prone to future issues. There is no singular solution to any one crisis.

  11. Challenges for USAR response Release of volunteers from their respective services; - Local and provincial services - Private sector - K 9 unit Currency to where we travel Traveling with commercial flights; - Number of team members restrictions - Equipment: Aviation restrictions
