  8. Obstacles to Current Business and Future Expansion . . . Availability of skilled labor engineering, maintenance, CNC programmers, drafting, customer service, shipping and receiving, IT, supervision and management. Certain jobs have been open for over a year due to difficulty finding qualified applicants. Availability of entry level workers. ASI currently has 26 job openings. Economic growth / new companies drive up labor costs for existing companies and limit growth in the short and medium term. 9

  9. Obstacles Continued . . . Lack of soft skills with job candidates. Lack of basic math skills with job candidates. Large number of people fail drug tests and background checks. Limited housing and public transportation limits draw from regional labor market. Lack of infrastructure which limits retail and restaurant chain expansion into the area. 10

  10. Ideas . . . Major emphasis and funding for analyzing root causes of the labor shortage in rural Georgia and for developing workable solutions to the problems. Partnerships between industry and technical colleges to assure curriculum and training match up with local industry needs. More emphasis on soft skills, leadership, and team training in primary education. Additional funding for GED programs. 11

  11. Ideas Continued . . . A pathway / curriculum for high school students who don t plan to go to college to work in manufacturing. Math curriculum in primary education that meets the basic needs of employers. More state funding and emphasis on local drug problem. Protection for companies that hire people living in halfway houses / ex-cons. State funding that supports development of infrastructure i.e., sewer, water, broadband, transportation in rural areas. 12
