  5. College and Career Goals Charlotte County is implementing the Florida Standards, which identify the knowledge and skills our students need for success in college and careers. College and Career goals provide the targets for improving instruction and student performance in literacy (as demonstrated in English/Language Arts), and mathematics. With improved instruction and resulting higher student performance, we further realize our vision of Student Success!

  6. Our Literacy Goal: The percentage of students who are college and career ready, as measured by assessments recognized by the state of Florida in English/Language Arts (literacy), will be: Elementary 68% 84% 90% Secondary 57% 78% 90% 2012 2017 2024

  7. Our Math Goal: The percentage of students who are college and career ready, as measured by assessments recognized by the state of Florida in mathematics, will be: Elementary 68% 84% 90% Secondary 57% 78% 90% 2012 2017 2024

  8. Leadership Goal: We will foster leadership in all leaders, teachers, staff, and students, to lead themselves, collaborate with others, and synergize to create a high trust culture built on character and competence. Charlotte County Public Schools empowers greatness in ALL!

  9. Literacy Strategies (High): Foster effective teacher planning - professional development/ observation conversations/use of teacher leaders Utilize observation and feedback to monitor and improve instruction Utilize progress monitoring/state assessments to determine needed improvement

  10. Literacy Strategies (Middle): Focus on Marzano s Instructional Framework, Domain 1 Student engagement Relationships Approach to Instruction leading to: use of scales, rubrics, learning goals, monitoring Focus on student engagement Use Lead Teachers

  11. Literacy Strategies (Elementary): Utilize observation and feedback of instruction Professional development Lead Teachers utilization Assessment Alignment (teachers spend 40% of their time assessing students).

  12. Math Strategies: Performance-based assessment for primary On-going training/PD data meetings Efficient and proper use of time STEM Use of manipulatives Smaller class size for remediation Khan Academy, iReady, and other supplementals

  13. Math Strategies: Professional development, with a focus on the Mathematical Practices Intensive Math scheduling Pacing guides Math coaches Common planning Vertical articulation Data understanding

  14. District Literacy Strategies: Implement a system of diagnostics that dig down into the areas of prior knowledge missing from a student s skill base. Implement a system of fluency instruction and progress monitoring of fluency. Use parent resource rooms to assist parents in selecting appropriate materials to use with children. Create and share crosswalk between the district s observation/feedback system and the Florida Standards. Support teachers in understanding the Florida Standards and the implications they have on instructional methodology. Add hour to the elementary school day.

  15. District Literacy Strategies: Add 7 PD days to the teacher calendar. Ensure students learn to read/ understand complex text in Social Studies, Science, Math and Arts. Reading across the curriculum. Add Lead teachers to the middle and high schools.

  16. District Math Strategies: Implement a system that generates diagnostic data. Ensure pacing guides are appropriate for preparing students for annual assessments. Provide teachers professional development in differentiating instruction including time for intensive math. Provide professional development for teachers to integrate math and science. Expand the implementation of Khan Academy and the flipped classroom approach.

  17. District Math Strategies: Implement Lead Teachers/ math coaches. Schedule opportunities for common planning. Provide professional development around pedagogically appropriate methodology in math (manipulatives). Hire district curriculum and instruction personnel for elementary and secondary mathematics.

  18. Leadership Strategies Develop personal leadership capacity (character and competence) in all. Provide opportunities for students to exercise personal and group leadership. Provide forums and opportunities for employee leadership at all levels. Increase the district s leadership capacity through professional development and succession planning. Extend our culture of high trust throughout our community.

  19. Next Steps Align division, department, and individual goals and strategies. Align Student Success Plans (school improvement plans) with district strategic plan. Communicate the district strategic plan with all stakeholders. Establish process for ongoing monitoring, accountability, and problem solving.
