  4. *Teaching Checkmate* Checkmate is a difficult concept to understand as it cannot be easily compared to other experiences. Our Approach: 1. Teach the definitions & CPR method 2.   5. Check When the king is being attacked directly by an opponent s piece we say the king is in check. The king can NEVER move into check. If he does by accident then the players moves back and makes a different move (not into check). Liam Murray 2019 primary.chess.workshop@gmail.com

  6. So youre in check CPR Method You can CHOOSE one of three things: Capture. Capture the attacking piece. Protect. Move a piece between the King and the enemy piece to block the check. Run Away.   22. Checkmating with Lone Rook ? Use the Rook to restrict the opponent's King. ? Support the Rook with the King. ? Confine the King to a box and make the box smaller if possible. ? If it is not possible to make the box smaller, move the King (a waiting move to force back the opponent's King.) ?
