Chapter Chapter 2 2 Vocabulary Vocabulary Matter & Changes
Atom Atom the smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element
Chemical Change Chemical Change a change that occurs when a substance changes compositions and forms one or more new substances
Chemical Formula Chemical Formula a combination of chemical symbols and numbers to represent a substance
Chemical Property Chemical Property a property of matter that describes a substance s ability to participate in chemical reactions
Compound Compound a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds
Density Density the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance
Element Element a substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means
Heterogeneous Heterogeneous composed of dissimilar components
Homogeneous Homogeneous has a uniform structure or composition throughout
Mass Mass a measure of the amount of matter in a substance
Matter Matter anything that has mass and takes up space
Mixture Mixture a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined
Molecule Molecule the smallest unit of a compound that maintains all the properties of that substance; two or more atoms chemically combined
Physical Change Physical Change a change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical composition
Physical Property Physical Property a characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured, such as density, color, or hardness
Pure Substance Pure Substance a sample of matter, either a single element or a single compound, that has definite chemical and physical properties
Volume Volume a measure of the amount of space matter occupies
