Proverbs 25:28 (NIV) Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control (ESV) A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls (NASB) Like a city that is broken into and without walls, is a man who has no control over his spirit (CSB) A person who does not control his temper is like a city whose wall is broken down
Importance Of Self-Control Plenty of evidence in scripture that tells us that self-control is important It will help us in our relationship with Christ It will help us with our relationship with each other It will help bring us peace in our lives
Galatians 5:19-21 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: sexual immorality, impurity, indecent behavior, idolatry, witchcraft, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:22-25 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let s follow the Spirit as well.
Self-Control Definition The ability to control oneself, in particular one's emotions and desires or the expression of them in one's behavior, especially in difficult situations.
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. So they do it to obtain a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. Therefore I run in such a way as not to run aimlessly; I box in such a way, as to avoid hitting air; but I strictly discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.
Lack Of Self-Control Adam & Eve (Genesis 3:6-7) David (2 Samuel 11:2,15-17) Samson (Judges 16:19-20) Moses (Numbers 20:11-12)
Final Thoughts Prevents discord (Proverbs 6:16-19) Nourishes relationships with others & God (Proverbs 15:1) Encourages Perseverance & Keeps Us Safe (Proverbs 13:3)
