The RSAs Citizens Economic Council
Theory of change & objectives Citizens have greater influence over national economic decisions through processes that build their capacity to be better informed about and to better engage directly with economic policy. The Council also helps showcase and build the case for policymakers and stakeholders making use of deliberative processes involving citizens. 1) Stakeholder support Increased support among stakeholders (politicians, policymakers, media, academics & CSOs) for deliberation and citizen engagement on economic policy. 2)Positive participant experience Participants experience positive impacts on literacy, confidence and understanding of different citizens' values and priorities on economy and society. 3) Policy traction Stakeholders engage with the economic goals and policies generated by the Citizens Economic Council.

On the road: emerging themes People are and make the economy, through everything we do How can you measure human happiness? Port Talbot participant Decline of local economies (mills, steelworks, tourism) and impact on participation/engagement Local pride and criticism of media/external representations of localities Low levels of trust in politics and decision-makers ( the elite ) Social cohesion seriously undermined by economic instability Discrimination often implicit/impacts upon people and groups invisibly: unforeseen effects of austerity discriminatory. Call for much greater respect & dignity for citizens including contributions made beyond paid work and empathy for those not able to work What you ve done is bang on . I felt like everybody here was valued as a citizen, this is what s missing and exactly what we need more of . The economy is what is needed to support life, essentially it comes down to a need to survive'. People are less willing to help than they used to be. Partly because they have been told there is no such thing as society, and partly because they are afraid of getting involved . Clacton-on- Sea participant Care workers participant Oldham participant
