MAIN FINDINGS Almost fourth fifths of citizens would vote for BiH s accession into the EU. Support is significantly higher in the FBiH and the Br ko District than in the RS. In comparison with the research in 2020 and 2021, the support for BiH's accession into the EU in 2022 slightly decreased compared to 2021 and increased compared to 2020. BiH citizens believe that the accession to the EU guarantees lasting peace and political stability, followed by free movement of goods, persons and capital and compliance with the laws and regulations. The same reasons were stated in 2021 and 2020. The percentage of citizens who do not support BiH s accession into the EU is increasing compared to the previous years (16% vs. 12.4% vs. 9.3%). There are no significant differences in the reasons why citizens from all parts of BiH oppose BiH s accession into the EU. The most common reason that citizens oppose BiH's accession to the EU is the higher cost of living and taxes. In addition, the loss of cultural diversity (especially for residents of the RS) and over-centralization are issues that also stand out. The majority of BiH citizens believe that combating corruption would improve their daily life. Other reforms required to improve their quality of life are reduced tax burdens, removal of barriers to employment and the reform of the judiciary and prosecution. The EU is interested in BiH 's accession because of its natural resources and to maintain peace and stability. Professional and qualified workers and the expansion of the European market are regarded as equally important.
MAIN FINDINGS Every third BiH citizen believes that BiH has applied for the EU membership, and every fourth citizen believes that BiH is negotiating for the EU membership. The majority of BiH citizens believe that the EU will improve its internal ties and continue with enlargement in the future. Such opinion is more prevalent in the FBIH than in the RS (63.9% vs. 28.2%). Unlike the FBiH citizens, people in the RS believe that the EU will not survive and it will experience a block division of sorts. Most of the citizens believe that the accession of BiH to the EU would result in the greatest benefit for young people. Politicians are still in second place. Entrepreneurs came in third place compared to previous years when students and researchers held that place. In all parts of BiH, the politicisation of the integration process is seen as the biggest obstacle to integration of BiH into the EU and unwillingness to change. A majority of BiH citizens have heard of the Directorate for European Integration. In 2022, 51.8% of citizens declared that they had heard of the Directorate, which is the greatest percentage to date (2021-44,9%, 2020-33,7%).
MAIN FINDINGS BiH citizens most often believe that the Directorate for European Integration coordinates the activities of the institutions in BiH in the field of European integration, followed by the fulfillment of obligations from the EU integration process. Compared to 2021, there is an increase in the percentage of people who believe that the role of the DEI is the fulfillment of obligations from the EU integration process (16.4% vs. 12.6%), while fewer people believe it is the distribution of the EU financial assistance to beneficiaries (7.8%) and it is at the same level as in 2020 (8.2%). Compared to 2020 and 2021, there is a decline in the opinion that the role of the DEI is to represent the interests of BiH in the EU institutions in 2022. When it comes to the European integration process topics presented in the media, in 2022, BiH citizens are most interested in the impact of the process on daily life and the possibility of using the EU financial assistance just as in 2020. Compared to the previous years when the reform process was the third topic as a matter of interest of BiH citizens, the benefits of the EU integration took this place in 2022. With regard to information about the EU integration, TV and Internet are the main media used by BiH citizens. In 2022, a print media is most often used as a supplementary media. In the first response of the citizens, the Internet became the main media compared to TV (49.7% vs. 43.1%) which dominated so far. Almost half of BiH citizens point out that the EU is the largest donor of funds to BiH. The FBiH citizens are more likely to believe that Turkey is the second largest donor, after the EU, while the RS citizens more often than others believe that it is Russia. When it comes to assessment of when BiH could join the EU, there is a noticeable increase in pessimism in 2022 compared to 2021 and 2020 (2021-7%, 2020-2.5%). One third of BiH citizens (34.7%) estimate that BiH will join the EU over the next 10 years. In 2020, 29% of people had the same view, and 40.6% of people in 2021.
MAIN FINDINGS Almost half of BiH citizens believe that BiH s path to the EU has no an alternative, and more than two fifths believe the opposite. In 2022, almost the same percentage of citizens have the opposite opinion as in 2021. One third of citizens could not estimate the annual amount of money that the EU allocates for BiH through the IPA national programmes. A total of 21.1% of respondents believe that the amount is EUR 30-100 million annually, while 16.2% of citizens believe that it is over EUR 100 million annually. BiH citizens would like to be informed about the projects implemented under IPA funds in the area of education, employment and social policy, as well as in the area of human rights and in agriculture, environment and energy.
