  3. Where are we now? 115+ local City of Sanctuary groups across the UK These include towns, cities, villages, boroughs and communities of sanctuary Streams of Sanctuary - Schools, Universities, Colleges, Libraries, Theatres etc of Sanctuary CoS Local Authority Network

  4. How can we bring about the changes we want to see? Our current thinking Through practical application of our values and network principles Contact theory - building relationships of solidarity Engaging mainstream through Streams of Sanctuary & Sanctuary Awards

  5. Network Principles Offer a positive vision of a culture of welcome for all Relationships of friendship and solidarity Working in partnership and network development Identifying opportunities for working on common causes Celebrate and promote the contribution of people seeking sanctuary Engage people seeking sanctuary in decision-making at all levels Promote understanding/awareness, especially by enabling the voices of people seeking sanctuary to be heard

Turning empathy into action/ Mobilising people behind campaigns Micro level example - Mrs B (from receiving community meets Mrs Y (a destitute asylum seeker) at a knitting club (a welcoming activity). As Mrs B learns from Mrs Y about her journey and unmet need for protection she becomes inspired to write to her MP. Macro level examples In 2015, after much public pressure, the UK Government agreed to implement a resettlement programme for Syrian refugees.

  7. City of Sanctuary UK Strategic Objective One - Provide network coordination and support to CoS groups in order to increase the number of groups, bring about an expansion in the activities undertaken and improve the engagement and participation of people seeking sanctuary; Strategic Objective Two - Facilitate communications across the network to share information (internal), promote a positive message of welcome for people seeking sanctuary and enable the voices of people seeking sanctuary to be heard directly; Strategic Objective Three - Develop and promote Streams of Sanctuary and awards work in order to embed the message of welcome within mainstream spheres of society and ensure that people seeking sanctuary are engaged and can participate in streams and awards initiatives; Strategic Objective Four - Contribute towards movement building through building partnerships, ensuring people seeking sanctuary participation and supporting advocacy and campaigning initiatives to ensure people seeking sanctuary are welcome and the aspirations of the Birmingham Declaration are realised.
