CITY PARKS AND RECREATION Hodgepodge of various providers with no truly aligned focus Private Non-Profit Providers (Little League, Football League, Soccer Leagues, Travel Programs etc.) Soledad Mission Recreation District Central Coast YMCA City had no employees dedicated to Parks & Recreation City Council has had a long-term goal to increase services and assume a greater control of recreational programming to match investments in assets
CITY COUNCIL COMMITMENT TO RECREATION Creation of Rec District and construction of Indoor Pool Construction of the Community Center Renovations of Vosti Park Renovations of Gallardo Park Future Projects Orchard Lane Park Front Street Park Landfill Opportunities Trail Networks Expanded Community Center Senior Center Teen Center Non-sports facilities (STEM, Arts, etc.)
TWO MAJOR GAMECHANGERS COVID Pandemic Opportunity to reset and consider how we provide programming into the future Impact on the Central Coast YMCA Management Agreement expired Building is empty and we are doing necessary repairs and improvements Re-roof completed Wi-fi installed Fixing climbing wall Signage being ordered Kitchen Repairs Bathroom Repairs Refinishing Floors New Paint Job Passage of Measure S Voters approved percent sales tax Goes into effect April 1, 2021 Provides $950,000 per year of new funding for quality-of-life purposes Recreation programs (STEM, Arts, Sports) Senior Services Childcare Services Animal Services City has hired first Recreation Manager and is in process of hiring PT staff Anticipated hiring of recreational staff in FY 21-22 or as conditions allow City will manager Community Center City will partner with other organizations
CITY OF SOLEDAD GOALS WITH SCHOOL DISTRICT We serve the same population and the same students. We anticipate the opportunity to serve students in after-school programs, summer camps and other opportunities previously provided by the YMCA. We look to continue to be a partner to allow District to utilize Community Center City hopes to work with District for Joint Use Agreements for athletic facilities when not in use by school needs Baseball Fields Basketball Gyms Soccer Fields Work together on a plan for a future performing arts venue for Soledad
CENTENNIAL SPORTS FESTIVAL One of the kickoff events for the new Soledad Parks & Recreation Department Late June 2021 Multi-sport event over a period of days held in different venues in Soledad All ages involved with events for everyone in a COVID-compliant atmosphere One Last Game Alumni program for High School Seniors in sports not played If audiences are allowed, proceeds to benefit scholarship funds City would like to work with District to partner on facilities More details to come soon
