ATLAS ITk Cooling system Prototype plant built to demonstrate operation of a single CO2 plant (15kW) + redundancy approach operation suitable for ATLAS and CMS. (end of 2019) DEMO ATLAS Pixel needs to know the min achievable cooling temperature Input needed for the ATLAS ITk Pixel Technical Design Report (end of 2017). BABY-DEMO One PP2 loop + corresponding CO2 Plant ( 1.5kW) 14/03/2016 C. Rossi - INFN Genova 2
ATLAS ITk cooling Cold temperature ability of the detector evaporator loops depends on: BD1: design, construction, operation of small cooling plant (Krakow CUT) - low-temperature capability of the plant BD2: design, construction, R&D of full scale PP2 distribution line (Institutes & CERN) - pressure gradients from detector to plant BD1 & BD2 will be coupled and tested to demonstrate the full system loop performance in realistic conditions with a representative prototype detector loop at CERN For both the common mechanics and detector group main challenges for the distribution design are concentrated in PP2 to PP1 distribution lines and the detector evaporator loop Part of the cooling R&D activity the a can be done by a collaboration of INFN institutes but the qualification tests must be done @ CERN 14/03/2016 C. Rossi - INFN Genova 3

ATLAS ITk Pixel detector activities 1. Studies on the global thermal efficiency of the pixel local supports This activity will be done at CERN in SR1 2. Thermal testing for material characterization of the materials used for the different pixel designs (complementary to SR1 tests). The thermal conductivity measurements are strongly influenced by thermal radiation and conduction through air for high conductivity materials (e.g. TPG, Carbon Foam, ) qualification in a measuring chamber ( 1 m3) with multi-layer super insulator radiation shield + vacuum pressure < 10-5mbar. Results: - drive the design/optimization process - input for numerical simulations. The tests should be independently repeated. 3. Other activities, Different activities can be done also for the Pixel detector group 14/03/2016 C. Rossi - INFN Genova 5
