What is claim, evidence, commentary? Claim the argument you are making about the author s/speaker s use of rhetorical strategies and how it conveys the message of the piece. Evidence the facts that will support your claim. In this case, snippets from the piece. Commentary explanation into how/why the author s/speakers use of this evidence is significant and/or effective in conveying the message of the piece. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART!!!!
CEC vs. WWH W: What strategy/device is the author using? W: Where is this strategy/device being used? (textual evidence) H: How does the author use this device/strategy effectively in order to further the piece? C: Claim The strategy and device and its purpose. E: Evidence The textual evidence supporting your claim C: Commentary The analysis supporting how the device/strategy is used effectively to further the piece.
