  1. Music and Memory

  2. In the media Listening to classical music makes you smarter!!!

  3. Past studies The Mozart Effect Listening to Mozart improves performance on spatial temporal reasoning tasks (Rascher, Shaw, & Ky, 1993). Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major, K. 448 Classical music improves short-term memory (Pring & Walker, 1994)

  4. Contradictory findings Listening to classical music may reduce seizure activity in epilepsy patients (Hughes, 2001; Hughes, 2002) Effect found in other domains (short-term memory) (Pring & Walker, 1994) Replicability issues (Steele, Bass, & Crook, 1999; Cartens, Huskins, Hounshell, 1995; McCutcheon, 2000, )

  5. Lets test it! Our hypothesis: Students who listen to classical music will recall more words on a memory task than students who listen to indie rock music.

  7. Indie Rock Music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDiFftqREks (Play for 3 minutes)

  8. Discussion What was the independent variable? The dependent variable? Was the hypothesis supported? Alternate explanations for the findings? How did we do random sampling in our class? What is the importance of random sampling (in an experiment and in research in general)?
