  1. MAKE YOUR CLASSROOM MUSICAL Kristine Quinn California State University, Fullerton

  2. WHY USE MUSIC IN THE CLASSROOM It is a core class that is required by law, it has state standards and a state framework, as well as national standards. Education Code Section 51210 Education Code Section 51220 The adopted course of study for grades 1 to 6, inclusive, shall include instruction, beginning in grade 1 and continuing through grade 6, in the following areas of study (5) Visual and performing arts, including instruction in the subjects of dance, music, theatre, and visual arts, aimed at the development of aesthetic appreciation and the skills of creative expression.

  3. WHY USE MUSIC IN THE CLASSROOM It is a central human endeavor, humans have been creating music from the beginning of civilization. It allows us to express emotions and connect with others. It adds to our well-being. It is a tool to teach to the social- emotional needs of our students. There are students who learn more through music, it is one of the multiple intelligences.

  4. WHY USE MUSIC IN THE CLASSROOM It is fun! It helps with classroom management! It is motivating! It brings joy! It helps us connect as humans!

  5. HOW CAN I USE MUSIC IN THE CLASSROOM? Management: use music as a transition, choose a song that is the right amount of time for your students to be ready for the next learning experience. When the song is over, they are ready to begin. Set the tone: during independent practice, play music in the background to set the tone. Want them calm? Play Bach or Chopin. Brain breaks: use short excercises to give them breaks during the academics of the day.

  6. LETS DO IT! Brain Breaks: Creative movement with scarves. Place yourselves in a circle around the room. Reading and notating: musical tic tac toe

  7. LETS LEARN TO READ MUSIC Musical tic-tac-toe: visual representation (concrete) moves to reading music (abstract) 4 people per game card 8-10 dots: represent one beat Place dots randomly Play and rotate Take away dots and represent with musical notation Make shakers and play music
