  1. Climate Change Climate change is an important topic to understand. Climate refers to the type of weather in an area for a period of 30 years or more. Climate differs the globe and can change naturally over time. But the term climate change refers to changes in global climate patterns caused by human activities.

  2. Factors contributing to climate change These activities include the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, which lead to an increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

  3. Factors contributing to climate change The greenhouse effect is a term that describes the warming of the Earth s surface and the air above it. It is caused by naturally- occurring greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, including carbon dioxide, which trap heat from the sun. Without the greenhouse effect, it would be too cold for life to exist on Earth.

  4. Factors contributing to climate change The burning of fossil fuels leads to more greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, being released into the atmosphere, causing the atmosphere to warm up.

  5. Factors contributing to climate change As more and more goods are produced, stored, processed, packaged and transported, there is a greater need to burn fossil fuels.

  6. Factors contributing to climate change Deforestation is the clearing of forest by large corporations in order to use the land as farmland to grow cash crops. During photosynthesis, plants (including trees) absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen. Deforestation leads to less carbon dioxide being absorbed from the atmosphere by trees.

  7. Custodians of the Earth As custodians of the Earth, we should demand that corporations put a stop to the harmful practice of deforestation. It is our responsibility to look after the environment for future generations.

  8. Effects of climate change One of the effects of climate change is the melting of the ice cap in the Arctic. As the ice cap melts, it causes sea levels to rise, which can lead to flooding in some coastal areas of the world.

  9. Effects of climate change Since the 1970 s the amount of krill in the Arctic has been decreasing. This is thought to be linked to the melting of the ice. Marine animals such as whales and seals feed on krill and depend on this food source for their survival.

  10. Effects of climate change Polar bears, in turn, rely on seals as a food source. This shows us how the food chain in the Arctic is affected by the reduction in the numbers of krill.

  11. Effects of climate change We have seen an increase in hurricanes and droughts since the 1970s. Some places are experiencing more storms and greater amounts of rainfall than ever before.

  12. Effects of climate change Hurricanes can cause terrible destruction. Settlements can be destroyed, leaving people homeless.

  13. Effects of climate change Flooding can be caused by heavy rainfall. Floods sometimes destroy homes and businesses.

  14. Effects of climate change Some locations on Earth are experiencing more droughts. A drought can lead to crop failure and famine. It can also cause the flora and fauna of an area to be threatened with extinction.
