OVERVIEW A Girl Scout Gold Award project An 8-day unit covering climate change, climate justice, climate anxiety, global solutions, personal solutions and a final project. The phrases climate change and climate crisis are used interchangeably
OPEN A WORD DOC It is suggested to make a word document, google document, etc. To take notes and complete assignments in.
TW: THIS TOPIC MAY BE HARD FOR SOME. MAKE ANY NECESSARY ADJUSTMENTS TO ENSURE YOUR COMFORT. We will talk more about climate anxiety and how to cope with it on Day 5. If you need immediate help, I encourage you to go to the counselor.

DAY 1- WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE? Learn about what the climate crisis is and the science behind it.
Type or write this in your notes. Opening Questions (Adapted from Project Zero): What do you think you know about climate change? DO NOW What questions do you have about climate change? What do you want to know? Why do you think we learning about this in a Language Arts class?
DEFINITIONS How is climate different from weather: Climate is the overall weather patterns of a place. Earth s climate is all the climates in the world combined. Climate change definition: The change in regional or global climate patterns, generally starting mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed mainly to the increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced by fossil fuels. Net Zero definition: Where the amount of greenhouse gases going into the atmosphere are balanced by the removal of them, think carbon sequestration.
DEFINITIONS CONTINUED Zero emissions/absolute zero: No GHG emissions, and no removal technologies are used to achieve this goal. Fossil fuel: A type of fuel, like coal or oil, made from fossils. Carbon dioxide is a biproduct of fossil fuels. Greenhouse Gas (GHG): A type of gas in the atmosphere that absorbs infrared radiation. Examples: Carbon dioxide and methane
MYTH BUSTER A common misunderstanding is that carbon dioxide is inherently bad for the Earth. This is flawed because plants and animals need some level of CO2 for cellular respiration and other biological processes. The trick is having a healthy balance.

Find your Carbon Birthday using the Keeling Curve graph: https://keelingcurve.ucsd.edu/ (link for students in Schoology post). A Carbon Birthday is the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere when you were born.
