CMA PRACTICE WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING Everyone is faced with days in which we feel we don t have enough time in our work day to accomplish our tasks. However, taking short cuts to make the work day more efficient, can lead to mistakes potentially causing harm to patients. Certain kinds of short cuts are also against THHSC, CMA practice standards and UTMB-CMC policy.
CMA PRACTICE WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING One example of this type of short cut is Cheater Bins Makerbot Thingiverse.(nd).
CMA PRACTICE WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING Cheater Bins are used for popping medications out of unclaimed KOPs or expired blister packs into individual bins specific for that medication. The bins are set up in rows and then the CMA would administer the medications to the patients as they arrived to the pill window in single doses from the bins acting more as a dispensing agent rather than a CMA. This is not allowed per policy. This is not allowed per policy. utmb utmb/ /cmc cmc nursing policy d nursing policy d- -27.1 27.1
CMA PRACTICE WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING Many issues arise from this type of infraction and other short cuts a med aide may take to make their work seem more efficient. The legal issues involved could jeopardize employment, your medication aide permit, and possibly cost you jail time, fines, and fees.
CMA PRACTICE WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING Medication orders shall not be disregarded. If there are any questions concerning orders, healthcare staff must consult the prescribing practitioner or nurse in charge. Managed Health Care Certified Medication Aide Manual, Section 3
CMA PRACTICE WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING Beyond legal issues, professionalism and ethical practices should also guide your practice while carrying out your medication administration duties.
CMA PRACTICE WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING Professionalism is the degree to which an individual possess and uses the knowledge, skills, and qualifications of the profession and adheres to its values and ethics when serving the patient. NPI 2019 LESSON PLAN
CMA PRACTICE WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING Ethics are moral principles that govern a person's behavior or the conducting of an activity www.dictionary.com
CMA PRACTICE WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING All staff must understand that they have a responsibility to act as accountable professionals.
CMA PRACTICE WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING This means putting the needs of those we serve above our own through accountability, compassion, integrity and respect. Your decisions should support UTMB-CMC s core values and purpose.
CMA PRACTICE WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING Question your practice and report others to your supervisor if you must ask Would this be allowed in another medical setting? Can I legally document this in the medication administration record?
CMA PRACTICE WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING Can this practice be extended to all patients? Would I want to receive this type of treatment or is this practice in compliance with THHSC? Am I worried about who is watching me?
CMA PRACTICE WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING Integrity is doing the RIGHT RIGHT thing even when you Think Think no one is watching!
CMA PRACTICE WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING UTMB-CMC and its management team value each and every one of the staff members that are employed within the organization. Safety for staff and patients is of the utmost importance.
CMA PRACTICE WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING It is your duty to practice in the correctional setting as a medication aide to the best of your abilities without knowingly violating ethical codes within your certification under THHSC.
CMA PRACTICE WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING You are expected to follow policy and procedures outlined in the Managed Health Care Certified Medication Aide Orientation Manual.
CMA PRACTICE WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING If you should witness unethical activity related to patient care by fellow co-workers, you must report the activity immediately or you will be held equally responsible if you knew and failed to report such violations. You could face disciplinary action up to and including termination.
CMA PRACTICE WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING If you should encounter a question or concern related to your job duties, you must contact your shift supervisor or Nurse Manager for guidance. Thank you for your time!
