  1. Third SPC Regional Technical Meeting on Coastal Fisheries U.S. TERRITORY OF GUAM COASTAL FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE TECHNICAL ISSUES AND PRIORITIES

  2. Coastal Fisheries Technical Priorities 1. Additional Data is needed to Complement and Verify Current Coastal Fisheries Data Collection Efforts, both boat-based and shore-based fishing methods, to address overfishing. 2. Having a Single Point of Contact to collect and summarize the various coastal fisheries data collection studies from local agencies, NGO s, the University of Guam s Marine Laboratory, and various U.S. federal agencies.

  3. Aquaculture Technical Priorities 1. Conduct and Complete a Feasibility Study to identify reef fish species that are currently depleted that can be raised via Aquaculture. 2. Complete a Feasibility study to Construct an Aquaculture facility to raise reef fish for restocking.

  4. Actions taken since RTMCF2 (Nov 2018) 1. Providing a Point of Contact for Guam for Coastal Fisheries and Aquaculture Data. 2. Forms and Summary Data on Coastal Fisheries Is Currently Available. 3. Guam is exploring the feasibility of having an aquaculture facility that raises reef fish that will be used for restocking.

  5. Coastal Fisheries Issues or Challenges 1. Community Buy-In with developing policies to address overfishing in coastal fisheries. 2. Improving Current Data Collection Efforts and Introducing Other studies to validate whether components of Guam s coastal fisheries is experiencing overfishing or whether some stocks are currently overfished. 3. Resolving Impacts To Coastal Fisheries such as Sedimentation from Land-based Activities such as Fires and Land Clearing, Coral Bleaching Events, Crown-of-Thorns Starfish Outbreaks, and the continued Practice of Fishing Methods that Harvest Unsustainable numbers of fish.

  6. Aquaculture Issues or Challenges 1. Lacking a Feasibility Study that explores Aquaculture as another management tool to restock reef fish species that are in decline. 2. Identification of Funds to construct, run, and maintain an Aquaculture Facility that can raise reef fish species for reef restocking. 3. Developing Local Expertise in Aquaculture.
