  1. The Key - A collaboration model enabling women subjected to domestic violence to acquire safe housing Carina Celebi Manager Sheltered accomodations

  2. To leave the violence Domestic violence affects mental and physical health When the perpetrator is a partner or a close relative, it makes it difficult to leave the violent situation due to emotional ties Placement in sheltered accomodation Legal processes are exhausting Concern for children and pets All of the above creates a feeling of hopelessness but we can do a lot to help!

  3. The consequences of violence concerning the living situation The victims of domestic violence have to break up from their own home and leave everything behind It is often necessary to move to another city Due to the new situation it is difficult to go back to work Economic violence is very common The Social services grant sheltered accomodation for short periods of time and temporary living solutions Anxious mothers and unsafe children This has been identified as very important to take action against on a national level and is now part of the Swedish government s action programme

  4. Our support- and collaboration model By establishing a collaboration between G teborgs Stadsmission and private property owners we sign rental agreements for the purpose of eventually transfer the contracts The master lease is ours and we sublet the apartments to women/families We take care of possible disturbances and monitor on a regular basis how the apartment is being maintained while we are responsible for the master lease The possibility to transfer the master lease to the individual/tenant will be tried after 12-18 months depending on how well everything has worked It s very unusual that the Social services are able to support the individual all the way to a master lease. For this reason we offer our help and advice until a master lease is in the individual s possession

  5. Our support- and collaboration model These conditions apply for Key Apartments: The need of protection and support needs have to be identified The individual has to be capable of taking responsibility of the apartment The apartment has to match the needs of the individual/family Long-term decreasing support from the Social services is required Support is offered at different levels. At the beginning of a placement we visit the individuals once or twice a week but after a few months this usually changes to once a week

  6. Our support- and collaboration model All individuals receive: Recurring safety plans and, if needed, we offer personal safety alarms Access to support via telephone around the clock and if there is an emergency we will come to the apartment as soon as possible Housing assistance and support in contact with authorities Emotional and practical support for both mother and children Opportunity to participate in activities and support groups

  7. What we have learnt so far It has been relatively easy to find apartments through our collaboration with private property owners The families who have moved into Key Apartments have experienced stability and calmness which have helped them to recuperate from the violence The Social services have had problems with adjusting their working methods to what we require from them in order to offer individuals Key Apartments 12-18 months is a long time for many individuals to wait for a master lease We would like to acquire apartments in more places than G teborg/Gothenburg
