Start your year by finalizing your college list Continue to visit schools if you have not exhausted your list already. Be prepared to ask questions of the admissions representative. Take along this checklist. See Mrs. Woods to set up a pre-arranged absence form. (p. 65 in planner). Four allowed per year. If not going to college, you can use these days to job shadow. Look at which colleges best fit your needs: Programs, campus life, athletics, fine arts, housing, overall education/intangibles. Talk with your parents about cost.
Register for required tests, its your last chance to take the SAT or ACT. Colleges take your best score (some superscore). When registering (www.actstudent.org, $55.00), request your scores be sent to WHS (263-510); you can also request scores be sent to 4 colleges. If qualify for F/R lunch, request a waiver from your counselor. WHS ACT for Juniors March 30th. WHS ACT for current Seniors Oct 8th. Apply early to make sure you qualify for as many scholarships as possible. Know the deadline for the college, if they have one. Some are early Nov/Dec and most apps are online (Admissions page). If qualify for F/R lunch, request a waiver from your counselor. College/Scholarship Essay resources Remember that your college applications aren t going to be a one-day-and-you re-done situation. You ll need to gather outside information and documents including your letter of recommendations, high school transcripts, and test scores. What does this mean for you? Start your applications early,so you have plenty of time to gather everything you need. Mrs. King, WHS Registrar, handles all transcript requests. Go to the Counseling office homepage and click on Transcript Request Form (current WHS student) .
Submit your FAFSAforms ASAP after October 1st. Priority deadline is March 1, 2021 for federal funds and Feb 1 for Missouri funds. Fill out to qualify for Grants, Loans, Work Study Attend Financial Aid Night at WHS on Oct. 7 at 6:30 in Lecture Room. Some scholarships require a completed FAFSA (A+ requires)

Fill out scholarships. Check the WHS webpagefor all scholarship info., as well as with your parents employers, college departments. NEVER PAY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP SEARCH Some schools send out packages on a first come, first serve basis. Be as accurate as possible since errors could delay your final award.Apply for as many as you can. Don t wait until the last minute to apply.
Register with the NCAA/NAIAClearinghouse if you want to play sports in college, as well as alert your counselor. Registration is $90 (fee waivers if F/R). Must also send ACT scores here. Code for NCAA is 9999 and for NAIA is 9876.

If entering military, visit with recruiters If you plan to enlist in a branch of the military, find time during your junior year to make contact with a recruiter from that branch of the military in order to make her/him aware of your interest. Finalize your college/work/military (life after high school) decision. Talk with the adults in your life that care about you. Re-examine what is important to you. Contact the schools you didn t choose to let them know you aren t attending. Verify your financial aid. Follow our last admissions checklist to meet housing deadlines.
Start your year by registering for and taking the PSAT/NMSQT. Use to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Cost is $17. Sign up on Counseling Office webpage and make checks payable to WHS. Oct. 14th(sign up by Sept 11th) Attend College Info Night March 31stat 6:30 pm. Keep your stress level low by creating an organization system for all of your college documents. If you plan to go directly into the workforce after graduation, begin making contacts with prospective employers. If you can arrange either part-time or summer employment with the employer of your choice, that will be an excellent way to establish a relationship that might continue as full-time employment after graduation. You may also consider doing part-time or summer volunteer work with the employer of your choice. This will serve to establish a relationship with that employer and enable you to demonstrate your dependability, work ethic, and skills.
