Strategic Mental Health Research Proposals designed to address the impact of COVID on Mental Health Services in Texas A series of research and evaluation projects are proposed to be implemented throughout Texas. These initiatives are designed to qualify the impact of COVID on the mental health of specific Texas populations, while simultaneously improving the delivery of evidence-based services throughout Texas. Development and evaluation of Family Resilience Tool CTRN Psychotherapy Early Psychosis Risk and Resilience Research Data Net Depression Network for Young Adult Providers
Development and evaluation of Family Resilience Tool This initiative will develop and implement a measurement based clinical decision-making model for screening, identifying, and treating families experiencing mental health concerns, and stressful events during and after the pandemic. Submitted by UT Health Houston, Dr. Leslie Taylor, PhD Current funding request: $2,995,555
CTRN Psychotherapy The proposed study leverages the infrastructure of the Texas Childhood Trauma Research Network (CTRN) to train therapists and deliver trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) and cognitive processing therapy (CPT) to Texas children with PTSD via telehealth in Spanish and English. The analyses will identify predictors of preferable response and tolerability of the two psychotherapies. Submitted by Jeff Newport, Charles Nemeroff, Karen Wagner Current funding request: $13,750,000
Early Psychosis This initiative will implement evidence-based, coordinated specialty care services in the community for transitional-age youth with signs and symptoms of early-onset psychosis. The proposed program has a tripartite mission designed to provide identification, diversion and treatment of early-onset psychosis for justice-involved adolescents and young adults, opportunities for trainees of various disciplines to participate in cutting edge clinical care, while also ensuring a robust research component measuring program outcomes with the ultimate goal to develop strategies for this population that can be replicated in communities across Texas. Submitted by Dr. Trivedi (UTSW) Current funding request: $9,332,600
Risk and Resilience Research The impact of COVID-19 on youth and their families will be evaluated to identify the role of psychological/physiological factors associated with risk and resilience. This will be accomplished by using the already established TCMHCC Depression and Trauma Research Networks. Submitted by Charles Nemeroff, M.D. PhD; Israel Liberzon, M.D.; Sarah Martin, M.D.; Jair Soares, M.D. PhD; Madhukar H. Trivedi, MD Current funding request: $14,635,862
Data Net This initiative will establish a Data-driven Adaptive Treatment Approach Network (DATA-Net) that is best suited to identify the neuropsychiatric sequelae of COVID-19, devise data-based treatment guidelines, and implement those treatments in real time as the pandemic and our understanding of the direct and indirect impact of SARS-CoV-2 evolves over the next 5 years. Submitted by Wayne Goodman (BCM) Current funding request: $21,000,000
Depression Network for Young Adult Providers This initiative will work to identify ways to identify college students in need of mental health services and opportunities to optimize these services based on individual characteristics Submitted by Israel Liberzon, MD ( TAMU) Current funding request: $6,421,328
