  1. Session 1

  2. Commissioned Commissioned (Acts 1:4 (Acts 1:4- -11, 23 11, 23- -26) 26)

  3. MAIN IDEA: MAIN IDEA: Jesus commissions His followers for Jesus commissions His followers for kingdom work. kingdom work.

  4. Introduction Commissioned Have you witnessed a commissioning service of someone? What were the significant elements of the service? How does Christ s commission apply to you as a disciple?

  5. Commissioned I. II. With Urgency (Acts 1:9-11) III. Through Prayer (Acts 1:23-26) Stay Focused (Acts 1:4-8)

  6. Stay Focused (Acts 1:4-8) 4On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.5For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. 6Then they gathered around him and asked him, Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel? 7He said to them: It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

  7. Stay Focused (Acts 1:4-8) Believers are expected to remain focused on telling others about Jesus. What were the disciples expectations of Jesus? How does that differ from Jesus expectations of them? How can our unanswered questions become distractions that shift our focus off telling others about Jesus?

  8. With Urgency (Acts 1:9-11) 9After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. 10They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.11 Men of Galilee, they said, why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.

  9. With Urgency (Acts 1:9-11) Believers must urgently carry out their own witnessing commission. What in life do you view as urgent or pressing ? How does the promised return of Jesus add to the urgency we should feel in sharing our faith with others?

  10. Through Prayer (Acts 1:23-26) 23So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias.24Then they prayed, Lord, you know everyone s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen25to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs. 26Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

  11. Through Prayer (Acts 1:23-26) Believers should pray when filling roles of service. What role should corporate prayer play when a group of believers are making a decision?

  12. CHALLENGE How can you commit to praying for opportunities to share the gospel with those in your sphere of influence? Write down a prayer for those: In your Jerusalem In your Judea and Samaria You have never met Commit to pray for those carrying the gospel to the nations.
