How comprehensive counseling supports the over-all goals of the school and the efforts of teachers: Drop out Prevention/Early Graduation/Ed. Enrichment Support teachers efforts to meet the needs of every student by facilitating alternative avenues of success for students who are either succeeding or failing. College & Career Readiness Social/Emotional Supports Help students resolve social/emotional issues that are preventing them from being able to focus in school and learn in the classroom. Maslow s Hierarchy of needs: Help students connect what they are learning in school with what they envision for their future. Connect success in school with success in life.
Drop Out Prevention Native American Population Native American Students, a minority population at MHS, are consistently less proficient academically than their white counterparts who are in the majority. This gap is evidenced by SOAR and ACT data. A Native American Group was started this year to address this gap as school involvement has been linked to school achievement. Students shared cultural pride in an assembly during November National Native American Heritage Month Christmas service project to the long-term care residents at the hospital Attended Native American college and career fair Promote college signing day hand out flower leis with candy to students who have signed on to college during the Senior farewell assembly.
Social/Emotional Supports GOAL: To address the problem of student stress as a top issue at MHS (indicated by data from the Systemic Assessment completed by parents, students, and faculty) INTERVENTIONS: Stress Management classroom presentation to all grades Mindfulness moment tip of the day during morning announcements Empower groups Why Try Curriculum Native American club RESULTS: We have seen a decrease in the number and severity of social/emotional at-risk students from last year
